Free litterbox/pet cave

Just got a new cat but, perhaps as part of an elaborate scheme to get me to spend lots of money, it turns out she's allergic to most litter and needs a particular litterbox/litter combo. As a result, I have a brand-new hooded corner litterbox, as seen here, for anyone who wants it. If you threw a pillow in instead, it would also make a nice cat/small dog cave.

It cost me $40 <2 wks ago, so if you'd like to throw in a few bucks for it, I wouldn't say no. Regardless, if it doesn't get claimed by Monday night, it'll be out on the curb, so payment is accepted but not required.

Out of curiosity, what type of litter does your cat require?

Something called Breeze--we're trying to treat her allergies by minimizing dust, and it seems to be the way to go. It's a two-tier system, with pellets on the top to catch solid stuff and a pee pad on the bottom to absorb urine. Hoping it helps! She has a lot of splotches where she's torn out her fur and opens skin up by scratching. We're trying a combination of testing, very-low-dust litter, and steroids.

I used this system when I had a foster cat restricted to my bedroom (litter crumbs on bed is NOT fun). It worked great, although poop needs to be scooped quickly if it's in a main area (it's not very bury-able in the system)

Just FYI, if you're not happy with this or if anyone else has a cat with respiratory problems, the overwhelming favorite on the feline asthma Yahoo group is "Dr. Elsey's Respiratory Relief" by Precious Cat - the clumping version is the one I always see mentioned, but it looks like they also have a silica crystal version.

(I haven't tried it as litter doesn't seem to be a problem with my asthma kitty -- among other things he doesn't dig/cover :-( so no dust, plus the inhaler appears to have him completely controlled -- I actually use World's Best which, along with other corn/wheat/pine based litters are supposed to be the worst for allergies.)

I had a cat that tore his fur out every spring/summer, and it was helped by changes in his diet. I had to stop giving him tuna, which he didn't like. He got steroids for years, and I am pretty sure that is what gave him cancer later in life, so if you can get your cat off the steroids sooner rather than later, I recommend it.

Thanks--that's definitely the plan. Did you ever hear anything about which foods tend to lead to skin allergies? Mine's transitioning from chicken/salmon to chicken/egg... Since she's only lived here for a couple of weeks and stress could be a factor, it'll take a while to isolate out how she responds to each food.

The rescue I got her from was a big help--they did a skin biopsy to rule out fungal or bacterial issues and did a food elimination diet that included feeding her venison and ostrich! Very impressive. Hoping now that she's in a clean, quiet environment we can figure something out that they missed.
