My understanding is that it's in fact a Northern European tradition, where it was believed that in the month (moon) following the wedding, when the fist child was to have been conceived, that the drinking of copious amounts of mead (fermented honey and water) would ensure the birth of a son.

Now, it may easily be that both things are true.
