the only thing i can think of off-hand is offering a few different stains/finishes (dark, light, something in between...) and maybe a corner unit. also stormdotter's idea for a cutout to allow for the mouldings along the bottoms of walls is a good one. that way the bookcase could rest flush against the wall. i love your idea for modular bookcases, too.
