local pay for adjuncts

Hi all--

I'm going to be interviewing for adjunct teaching jobs. I am very new to Massachusetts, so I have no idea what to expect as far as salary. If anyone here has adjuncted (I'll be in English, btw), can you tell me roughly what you got paid per course?

Down south it seemed to usually be around $3000/course, but I also paid $315/month for a 1-BR apartment there. *rent nostalgia*

It varies a lot by school, and perhaps subject. I know about computer-based classes. Northeastern is @ $4800/course. Harvard Ext is @ $6800/course; A state school is @ $4200/course. Contact time varies too, depending on whether its grad or undergrad (anywhere from 30 hr/15 weeks to 45 hrs/15 weeks). Also some places provide TAs and some don't.

Hey, I'm a southern transplant too. Where are you from?

UMass Lowell was paying $3500/course a couple years ago when I last taught there.

Merrimack College, up in North Andover, pays $2300 I think for the first few semesters, and then you get a raise up to $2600 or so per course. They also have a fifteen student cap on all writing courses, so if you teach two courses there, it's about $4600-$5200 for 30 or fewer students - not too shabby. But you can only get two courses, so you'll want to teach at more than one school if you go that route.
