When I was a kid in the wilds of upstate NH, my parents ran a tomato stand out of our garage every summer to help pay for school clothes, and it was my job to keep an eye out for customers. We used to get a LOT of those tomatoes, and they always went into what we called "canners"--the not so pretty ones that were bought in bulk for, well, canning. I didn't think this was fair, so I arranged a whole bunch of them on the stand one day w/a small sign saying "Buy me, please! I'm lonely!"

My mom didn't realize what I'd done until one of her customers couldn't stop laughing, and then she remembered that a couple of others had been chuckling away to themselves as well...ah, the innocence of childhood. (No, I didn't really get in trouble for it, although I don't remember exactly what my mom said about it...)
