First let me say that I love Memorial Day, and parades in general, like no other. But I have to say that closing off virtually the entire city to traffic 2 HOURS before the parade was set to begin was a little over the top. I had to argue with a DPW worker and a police officer in order to return to my house from an errand. Then, thinking I could do some errands before the parade, attempted to get to Davis Square. This was not possible, in fact, you couldn't even drive through Teele Square, despite the fact that the parade wouldn't arrive there until at least 2:00!!! My visits to McKinnon's and Starbucks were nixed. I can't imagine what closing off the square to any and all traffic 2 hours prior to the parade did to the days' business for merchants in the square. Luckily Starbucks in Cambridge was happy to have my business.
