Turkeys

While out for a morning walk with my three year old daughter we saw a mama turkey and ten little turkey chicks in a neighbor's yard. The turkey family stuck around most of the morning, pecking at food in the grassy backyards of our neighbors. Mama stayed very calm considering that she was being watched by 5 or 6 people. The last we saw them was behind the Congregational Church on College Ave.

IIRC, baby turkeys are called poults. How cool that a picture was got!

Thank you for posting.
I hope they're ok being in the city.

Is that Francesca, looking toward College?

Heh, look at how worried mother turkey is.

She is watching suspiciously before crossing! Urban turkeys are like that. :)

That's great! I am afraid of the aggressive urban turkeys, but that's an adorable picture - I've never seen baby turkeys before. :)

This is the second report of Mama & baby turkies in Somerville.

I hope that they will be left alone so that she can raise them in peace.

FYI...there have been no reports of any of these turkies being aggresive in recent years. If they are left alone to raise their young there should be no issues.

Mmmmm.... turkey mcnuggets

Thank you for posting. With sightings on Francesca and Kidder, I find myself wondering what their range is. And where they're nesting, though I imagine it would be best for them if that remains a mystery.

YES.

[identity profile] purpless77.livejournal.com 2009-05-26 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just worried about them crossing roads. It's sad enough to see the other wild life that didn't make it to the other side of the street. It would be even more sad to see wild life that isn't so common.

Mrs. Gobbles from Porter Square?

[identity profile] rkasper.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder whether that's the same Mrs. Gobbles that I found in Porter Square last year (http://kasperowski.com/2008/04/mrs-gobbles.html).
