i worked for an amazon.com-like place and frequently had to contact ups or fedex on behalf of a customer (there is a 'preferred' line). if there is a sig they can see whose it is, or if you call soon enough, they can call the driver. they can always talk with the driver, but the longer you wait the more likely the answer will (understandably, sadly) be "i don't remember."
for us, we would file a claim with ups and honestly most lost stuff is never found. it is sometimes, but we would just deal with ups on our end and ship out a new product to the customer.
