garbage can lids?

Due to some combination of high wind and careless garbage pickup, all our plastic garbage can lids have vanished. As far as I know, no store will sell a lid separate from the can (and Tags specifically refused to do this). Does anyone have a counterexample? I'd rather not waste time and money replacing perfectly functional garbage cans if there's an alternative.

And besides, have you ever run through the comedy of errors that ensues when you try to tell the garbage collection folks to take the can as well as the garbage? Never again, I tell you.

EDIT: RubberMaid (at least) will allow you to order just the lid via their toll free number. Call 888-895-2110, between 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. M-F. Give them the part number -- that's what they use to identify which part you're ordering -- and a credit card # to pay. Delivery in 2-3 weeks. Enjoy!

The internets provide all (http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=replacement+garbage+can+lids&rlz=1B5_____enUS322US323&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=tPTWS8vkDsX7lwf40rSLBA&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=3&ved=0CCsQrQQwAg). ;-) One of those results is for Ace Hardware, the brand Tags is affiliated with, so they could presumably order them in for you if you brought in the item number.

I have a spare lid you are welcome to. Rubbermaid Roughneck ~20-21" in diameter. Message me if you're interested.

A trash can is the hardest thing in the universe to dispose of ;P

[identity profile] srakkt.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had this same problem over at my place, and am giving serious thought to shelling out for two of the big hinged-lid mini-dumpster style garbage cans, and going a little nuts with marking them so they don't wander off.

Until you locate lids, keep the unlidded trash cans out of sight. Somerville is fining early and often for such horrific offenses.

My understanding is that the way to dispose of a garbage can is to cut it up into pieces and put them in a garbage bag.

[identity profile] fefie.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Keep them out of sight of the rats too.

The fine for open trash bins is to change behavior as well as collect revenue for it - open trash bins attract rats, and many neighborhoods in Somerville have rat infestation.

[identity profile] ceelove.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It says a lot to me that Somerville is putting effort into fining people now, without having first put effort into telling people that lids were important and warning them that there would be fines.

Looks like you're all set now, but FYI, unless the lids are attached to the cans, they should not be put out with the trash on the curb.

sawzall always ftw!

[identity profile] paradoox.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't that lead to a fine?

[identity profile] ukelele.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I recall being notified of that, though I don't recall via what channel.

[identity profile] surrealestate.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The cans have to be securely lidded while stored, not when they're out for pick-up.

[identity profile] aquaflame16.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
right, and rat reduction is a worthy goal.
which is all fine, except for how my landlord got fined for an un-covered EMPTY trash can.

[identity profile] aquaflame16.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder if there's a way to do a co-op or something to go in together and buy a bunch of them so they'd be cheaper? Cuz I'd love to have one, but $$$$!!!!

Can't you keep the lidless barrels for yard waste (I guess marked accordingly), or would that still result in a fine?

[identity profile] grapefruiteater.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Our landlord switched to these, and they're awesome. They have wheels, which is great.

[identity profile] teresaelsey.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
If anyone srsly is having difficulty getting rid of lidless trash cans, I would love one or two to try growing potatoes in.

[identity profile] surrealestate.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
True. Afaik, yard waste barrels don't need lids. Not everyone needs multiple (or even any) bins for yard waste, though. :)

[identity profile] pekmez.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
They are only required to be covered if they are full. I would fight the ticket if you have an unlidded can with no trash in it.

[identity profile] pekmez.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
We put the can upside down with a big sign saying "take the trash can too", and it went away.

[identity profile] boblothrope.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
We have Cornerstone brand wheeled trash cans, with lids that are attached by a hinge. They work great, except they make a lot of noise when they're wheeled around. Our wheeled recycle bins make much less noise, for whatever reason.

Can anyone recommend cans that are quieter? (Or a DIY fix?)

[identity profile] pekmez.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe we have once bought lids without cans at Home Depot, for the same cost as the can, and let them do what they want with the leftover trash can.
Kind of a waste of money, but I wound up with what I wanted, at least.

[identity profile] fangirl715.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
My landlords were fined when I put our can out without its lid; now I understand that you're supposed to keep the lids on except when it's on the curb waiting for pickup...excuse me? They were fined when I did what I was supposed to do??? (I haven't mentioned anything about this to them, not wanting to stir stuff up, but I'm getting the distinct impression that the City will stoop to any means possible to collect money through fines, even when it involves violating their own laws.)

[identity profile] gookalockgeek.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
this happened to my landlord as well. i called 311 and they confirmed that the lids are not supposed to be on when the cans are at the curb, but the people issuing the tickets seem to be confused.

cornerstone brand trash can

[identity profile] pamela103.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi, can you please tell me where you purchased your cornerstone wheeled trash can? I see them around but cannot find one! Is there a website?

Thanks so much!!!!

Sorry, I can't help you -- they were here when I moved in.
