Democratizing Production, a sprout spaghetti dinner

Hi everyone!

We're hosting another spaghetti dinner and performance event over at sprout's studios on Wednesday night. Join us for good food, music, performance, and conversation. I put a longer description of the night's theme and performers in the cut-tag, but here's the short-and-sweet...

WHAT :: Democratizing Production, a sprout spaghetti dinner
WHEN :: Wednesday December 15, 730PM dinner with performances @ 8PM
WHERE :: 339R Summer St. Somerville MA
$$$ :: $10 suggested donation, all welcome

PS If you are a musician and you want to play with the Spaghetti Dinner House Band (a pick-up group for players of all skill levels and players of all un-amplified instruments), show up at 630PM to play through some tunes before the event!

Visions of democracy imply not only government of, by, and for the people; but also the creation of culture of, by, and for the members of our communities.

As tools made to support creativity and production become cheaper and more widely available and people begin to rediscover existing methods of production, we are seeing home-made and DIY projects becoming more and more sophisticated. Personal video cameras, hand-me-down brass instruments, cheaper computers, and craft fairs are blurring the lines between those who produce and those who consume. Some say that this shift will mean the cultural artifacts of our culture won't just tell the stories of the wealthy and powerful but also the stories of ordinary people. This is the question we've asked our performers, who will include ::

+ Nitin Sawhney, who will present documentary films made by youth in a participatory media program he co-founded in Gaza
+ Jenny Romaine, a NYC-based performance artist, and member of Great Small Works theater company, who will show a video documentary of toy theater shows created by high school girls incarcerated in the Riker's Island prison.
+ Alec Resnick, a co-founder of sprout, who will share artistic projects made in a series of educational programs he has developed introducing ideas in math through computer programming
