Then streets within a small radius of a T station should be posted as 48 hour parking.

There's no reason to apply this rule to the whole city.

And nobody else has pointed out that Cambridge and Boston don't have this rule. (Cambridge has a 24-hour rule, but it doesn't apply to residents -- only to nonresidents with a visitor permit, or parking in one of the few remaining unrestricted streets.)
