Hair Stylist in Davis Square?

I need an excellent hair stylist in the Davis Square area. I have some strange specifications though.

1.) I'm shy, I don't like to talk to stylists very much unless I click with them. So someone who doesn't push their life story on me would be good.

2.) I prefer a woman.

3.) I'd like someplace that isn't so trendy that when I, a non-trendy person, walk in I don't feel welcome. Someplace nice, comfortable, with excellent customer service would be ideal.

4.) Good prices, of course.

5.) The stylist has to listen to me but also be able to give good suggestions.

I'm looking for a cut, possibly a color or a perm. Got any places to suggest?

It LOOKS a little trendy but Judy Jetson's in Porter Square is really great. The stylists are more down-to-earth than their ambiance would have you believe. My phobic-of-hairstylists-that-do-what-they-want-and-don't-listen best friend loves them there.

I second the Mario's reference. I've tried two places in Davis, and Mario's actually listened to me when I said what I wanted (unlike the salon next to J.P. Licks!) and were nice but not too talky.

It looks like an old-lady salon, and it sort of is, but I've always had good luck with Renaissance in Teele Square. Martha, the owner, is very low-key and a good stylist. And it's cheap! (I've only had cuts there; nothing fancier.)

Sure. My cut is fairly simple, but current (uh, I think...). I went in at one point and said, "I don't know what to do with my hair. Help!" And she came up with something great.

Sorry, I have to chuckle at this. The 'current cuts' are nothing more then spin offs of older styles. There is no such thing as a new style when it comes to hair, or fashion really but that is an arguement for another time.

Anyways, yeah, they can cut your hair without making you look like an old lady.

i go to Salonika, right near out of the blue, the seafood restaurant. soula, the owner, is very nice and approachable and friendly. she charges $40 (i think) for a women's haircut. I've been going to see her for several years & like her a lot.

Yes, they fit very well, not too trendy, but not shady either, customer service is pleasant, price is good. Anna is very friendly and she comes across as someone who can be creative, but would listen to what you want. She has a very easy going disposition and a spirit of a 20-year old, even though she is past 40. I had a few haircuts with her and many blow drys, no coloring, but I know she does it all, as she was offering me to consider highlights a couple times.

I second the suggestion of Judy Jetson's. I liked David, but I don't know whether he's still there or not. They did a wonderful job with my coloring (back when I could afford to have my coloring professionally done). If you drop in, they will give you a free consultation. Then you can decide whether you're comfortable or not before committing.

I agree with you that fashion and hair cuts are constantly revolving. And I know that current cuts are just spinoffs of old ones. However I am sure there are new ways of doing things that come along. I would prefer someplace that has a pulse on the latest and greats tricks to make me look and feel fabulous.

I like the idea of a free consultation! May I ask what color you went from/to? I'd be considering going to blonde from dark red. That's a transformation that has to be done perfectly, I think.

I don't remember her stylist's name but everyone I know who goes there loves it. I haven't been because they're really wonderful with straight hair and I have curly hair.

I went from medium brown to two-tone light brown with blond streaks. It looked really great. It wasa rather costly because of the streaks, but it sounds like you're not planning to get that.

You can just drop in and one of the stylists will talk to you and look at your hair type, and you can discuss your plan so they can match you with a stylist who specializes in that.

do -not- go to the judy jetsons if you want your stylist to listen to you. they do what they want, and get pissy if you are unhappy. i know more people who walked out of that salon in near tears....

plus, apparently hardly any of the stylists get their own hair done there

yes and they totally messed up my hair on two separate occasions (over a 4 year period, so obviously their customer serive isn't improving). once they gave me thte totally wrong cut, but the stylist was much more interested in her lunch than fixing my hair. she told me (on a saturday) that i could come back in the evening to get my hair fixed, the problem was i'd made the appointment in the afternoon as i'd had some function to go to that evening, which is why i'd needed my hair cut.

the 2nd time i went there, i wanted some lowlights put in my hair as it was a little too blonde, and they literally dyed 95% of my hair brown. like, a flat dull brown with no highlights, no depth, i could've done it myself with a box of clairol.

plus they are pretty pricey.

I went there a few weeks ago based on another post in this community, and while I found the person a bit pushy when she told me what I should do to fix the mess (I did ask for a suggestion), and she cut off more than I thought she would, causing me to whimper...the next day when I washed my hair and felt how much lighter it was and saw how much better it looked (pretty much the look I was going for), I appreciated it.

I'm not sure I'd go back, I'd like to try the others that people have suggested, first--but it wasn't bad.

Yeah, she cut my hair much shorter than I asked and in a cut that does not look good unless I bother to style my hair (which I don't, and which she should have been aware of when I walked in the door). I was pretty disappointed, but at least I know it'll grow out. Maybe they're good for shorter hair?

i second you on judy jetson's. i went there my first time and told the stylist that i needed a tiny trim because my bangs were starting to go flat. she gave me a mullet instead. i had to go to another salon and get about 6 inches of hair chopped off to fix it.

are some things I don't need to worry about with
short hair and all.

To answer the actual question, I use MK Hair in One Kendall Sq
because it is close to work. They do a reasonable job
with my (short) hair.

Where do I go ... hmm. Well, right now my hair is long and simple (past my shoulders) so I just cut it myself because I can't be bothered paying money or dealing with someone who wants to "do something creative" (read: UGLY). I'm getting it cut super short (like a boy haircut) later in April at a friend's barber in Philly. After that, I imagine I'll keep up with it at a barber.

I went there for my first haircut in years, and got Angela. The style is great. I'm also a non-chatty customer. The haircut took a long time, and the non-chattiness got pretty awkward. Other than that, I think it fits all your conditions.

angela is relatively new at cutting hair; she's also soula's sister (angela did my updo for my wedding as well). i like her a lot. maybe she was in a mood that day or something. jackie is another stylist who works there; she is more experienced. there is also a guy named mark who is very experienced.

My hair is corkscrew curly and I'm always dreadfully scared of getting it cut for fear of turning into Annie -- I found a lot of success with M Salon on Mass Ave a little out of Porter -- I see Dana there. He's into simple cuts for curly hair that don't make you poofy.

I've been to Marios three times so far, all with different stylists, and I like Anna the best. I was just there over the weekend and didn't care who so they gave me who I think was Mario himself, greyish hair... very rough, kept turning my head at awkward angles, and when he sensed I didn't like my head turned by his hands, he jabbed me. Ugh.
