there is a very small but high quality (& last i checked low in price) store called "putting on the knitz" in newton (i believe it is on washington st.). its the best yarn store i have seen around. it is a bit farther, but i believe there is a bus from either harvard or central that can get you there.
another place to look would be tribal ways (yes that would be the piercing/tattoo studio in boston) in addition to body piercing, they now have "spirit ways" for pagan/wiccan supplies, and "fiber ways" for yarn spining and weaving (i am not sure if they sell spun yarn, or if they just sell wool and other fibers to spin yourself.) their website is www.tribalways.com
if you have a car or access to a car there is a great fabric store in woburn that has a very very good yarn section. i cant remember what the name of the fabric store is (i think it may be jo-anne) but its off of 128/95 north (i believe exit 36) and its in the same mall that tj maxx and panera bread are in (signs for both are visable from teh highway) (its on the opposite side of the highway from charette if you know where that is)
