Tailor

Any recommendations for a tailor?  I just have some pants that need hemmed so I'm not looking for anything complicated.  I know dry cleaners do this, but they usually just ask how many inches you want the pants shortened.  I'd rather have a tailor who is going to look at the pants on me & shorten appropriately.

Thanks!

We have a tag for this with lots of old entries, though I'm not sure anyone has asked this specific question. (Sounds like the tailor had better have a changing room for you.)

Try Jack the Tailor in Porter Square. He does good work, but the dry cleaner is probably cheaper.

I second Jack, especially if you have anything complicated.

thirded!

I've also brought shoes to him to be repaired with fantastic results. I believe he brings the shoes to a family member who is a cobbler, but the turn-around is still speedy.

Jack was a pretty major asshole about my guide dog, for whatever that's worth. He said I should wait outside until other customers left; when I refused, he made me cut in front of other customers to do my fitting so I would get in and out as soon as possible. (His establishment is not spacious, but he did not cite that as the reason. When I asked if he had allergies, he said, "Uh...uh, yeah. Yeah.") He lost my business, and that's too bad for him; I'm short and need to get things hemmed all the time.

ETA: Instead of just bitching, I should add that I go to Eleni's in Davis Square now.

Yup. Jeans might cost a little extra, depnding on how bitchy they are, but yeah.

I might be getting in touch with you soon then! I have a pair of jeans that I've been meaning to get hemmed for a few months now, I just have to get myself organized haha.

Elegant Tailor, on Mass Ave between Harvard & Porter near Cambridge Common (the bar, not the park). They did my wedding dress alterations and cleaned the dress for less than $100. The only thing they can't do, sewing-wise, is leather lackets.

And they have two dressing rooms :-)

Somerville Cleaners in Ball Sq does hemming, has you try on to get the length right, AND has tailored my leather jacket.

i love eleni of new york. she's a hilarious sweet lady, and always mumbles "too many slacks" gesturing to a mountain of clothes to be altered.

i've had multiple work pants and jeans shortened, as well as a bridesmaid dress alteration.

oh yeah, and she will make you try the clothes on with the shoes you'll be wearing to get the correct height etc.

Porter Square Dry Cleaners and Tailors

I always recommend Porter Square Dry Cleaners and Tailors (on Elm St.) for "simple" fixes like this. They've hemmed pants for me and I've never had an issue with their work. I always try them on there and they pin them up to the correct height. I think this place is probably a lot cheaper than going to a tailor for something that isn't really complicated!
