How are we supposed to get rid of old tvs?

there's about three on my street that the trash guys don't take.

In Somerville you get a sticker from the DPW and put it out the day after trash day with the sticker on it.
You might try calling your DPW to see what they have to say about it.

Actually, no sticker is required in Somerville, but you do have to call 311 to arrange pickup.

From the DPW website:

How can I dispose of a TV and Computer Monitor?
TV and Computer Monitor may be placed curbside on your regular trash day. Constituents must notify the city by calling 3-1-1 or (617) 666-3311 the day before to schedule pick up.

So the answer to the OP is, "they get left on the other side of the Somerville line".

Well, they have to call 311 to get a pickup. Most people just put out with the trash and they sit...until someone else calls 311.
