Board games?

I remember a while back people used to meetup and play board games at Boloco.

Do these meetups still happen?

Well, if they do, they're not at the Boloco in Davis (it closed in July). I would be interested in finding out where it is now, if it is still going.

sadly, not that I know if, which is a shame, because I enjoyed the ones I got to.

The D_S ones (once a month on Sundays, IIRC) have sort of disappeared. I was talking to someone this very weekend about trying to re-start them, perhaps at the replacement for Boloco, which is the Ripe Tomato, or red Tomato or something...

The Meetup.com ones (every other week on Wednesdays) moved to some random room on campus at MIT. But I havent been since them moved because getting to MIT on a Wednesday night isn't worth it for me...

Green Tomato II, so, really, the unripe tomato. or, well, the second unripe tomato.

Sounds like the Green Tomato (II) could use the business, too - they're having a "grand opening" 25% off sale all month, several months after they opened.

That's too bad. They don't seem to be doing too well (at least that's my impression, based on the fact that whenever I walk by, they look nearly empty). I've been there once, and I enjoyed it, but my dining-out budget is strained and they're not usually at the top of the list whenever I can eat out. I'm guessing that, with the economy, a lot of people are eating out less (at least that's what my close personal friends on CCN and MSNBC tell me). Bad time for a new restaurant!

Yeah - the niche they seem to fit for me is more like wanting a tasty, inexpensive lunch or dinner when we're low on groceries or on energy to
cook something, or have to grab lunch on our way through Davis Square.
But I wouldn't choose them for a special meal. I do appreciate that there's an option that serves a variety of simple American foods (ie, not just sandwiches but also turkey, mashed potatoes, meat loaf, vegetables, etc.)
A little cheaper and more cafeteria-style than Rosebud, but I suppose that spot has once again been filled with something similar to what you can find elsewhere in Davis.

Yes, I was talking to someone about it this weekend too...wait a second, I think that person was you. At Barfleet. After 3 too many Yukon Torpedoes.

Well, clearly we have to make it happen now.

these games nights were organized by me.
let's bring them back...

The single biggest thing:
Would Green Tomato be amenable to this? I've never eaten there. I went to Boloco a lot so I knew the atmosphere and the management of Boloco actively encouraged game nights (and would even offer plate or chips and salsa or sometimes bake us free mini-cookies to pass around). Would Green Tomato think we were a good thing if we plunked down at their tables for four or five hours?

Another thing:
The hours of green Tomato have them closing a little earlier at 8pm so this would be more of an afternoon thing. like 2-3 pm to close. Is that a big problem? It is a Sunday, after all, so people wouldn't be staying out late on a schoolnight if they have office jobs or the like.

How about the First Sunday of Each Month?

If the location is up for it, I'm in.

The Green Tomato is pretty lame in my experience, not to mention COMPLETELY DEAD. I was meeting a friend who ran an hour late for dinner, and they didn't even comment that I just sat at a table to wait for her because I was the only one there. So in terms of hogging their space, I don't think they would be concerned. Hell, they might love it in hopes that we'll order some food. As far as the atmosphere, it's really the same simple, almost sterile (well, it feels sterile now that it's the Green Tomato) one as before, so I don't think this would be out of place or a disturbance or anything.

Wednesday evenings are "Board game night" in the downstairs event area at Pandemonium Books and Games in Central Square. See http://www.pandemoniumbooks.com/. If you join/post in their forum, you might be able to get more people. They have a goodly selection of store-games, or bring a game of your own to play.
