So, back to the buskers....

It sounds like there is a lot of neutral, a lot of negative, and a lot of positive (though "better than traffic noise" is not exactly a stellar endorsement of buskers). It sounds like there is some room for improvement and increased variety in the music that we are confronted with in the square.

Perhaps, but that's only going to happen if more or different people decide to busk there. It's not something any of us can affect, unless we're performers. There isn't an audition process.

well, if we started killing the really bad ones that would impact things a bit...

I like the surprise of it... its not top 40 radio-- I don't expect to hear Beyonce everytime I go to Davis.

I think "variety" is not the solution to "lack of quality" -- so, what is your intended agenda here?

[identity profile] thetathx1138.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
It's the fact that I've started expecting bad Dylan covers that bothers me.

[identity profile] hrafn.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, "surprise" is exactly what I -don't- want at 8 fricking a.m. while waiting for the T ;)

Part of living in a city is being "confronted" with things that you don't like, but others do. If you don't like it, that's unfortunate, but consider that there are probably an equal number of people who hate and are annoyed by many of the things that you enjoy.

[identity profile] closetalker11.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, you're in a public place where self-selecting musicians are performing for free. This isn't a celebrity concert series. I'm not sure what you plan to accomplish, but if you want different music, bring headphones.

It's hard to figure out what you're getting at here, but if you're a busker yourself, go for it! Call 311 and ask them what the protocol is, whether there's a schedule, etc. and then dazzle us!

[identity profile] mzrowan.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm with [livejournal.com profile] redcolumbine -- I didn't think your first post was especially leading, but making a second post summarizing the first and re-opening the topic? I'm curious to know what your goal is here, 'cause I'd rather know it up front than have you keep "casually" bringing up the topic of buskers weekly.

[identity profile] surrealestate.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I echo this and the previous comments. Say what you're trying to say. This whole "discuss amongst yourselves" thing is just annoying, and is also why you aren't seeing much in the way of thoughtful replies.

Yes

...

Maybe a troupe of mimes should take over the busketeering; then everyone would be happy, except those who have mime-o-phobia or something.

i have mime-o-phobia, so i think this is a terrible idea! :)

I would pay money to hear Beyonce covers in Davis Square.

Anything but that one guy who sounds like an emo street waif trapped in a well with a guitar.

I am morally anti-mime and take loads of offense a this.

i do- if you are indeed talking about waiting for the T down in the station.
will it be the banjo guy?
will it be the accordian guy?
will it be the guy who mostly sings beatles and elton john?
i like the surprise because all the people who play down in the station are good and there is a pretty good rate of variety down there.

when it comes to up top in the square, there is not as much variety and not as much quality, either. those are two separate things, though.

[identity profile] emcicle.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
i miss when brian webb and peter mulvey would play down in the T stop...

Re: buskers, follow-up

[identity profile] mzrowan.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
You're seriously trying to tell me that you didn't make this post (http://community.livejournal.com/davis_square/1707270.html)? If that's true, then someone else has your LJ password and you need to do something about it. However, I strongly doubt it is.

[identity profile] firepail.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
this.

unless you are suggesting that Davis somehow get a booking agent for buskers? do buskers "go on tour"?

Re: Yes

[identity profile] firepail.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
fine, mummenschanz then?

[identity profile] firepail.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
and the "you" is the OP, not you closetalker11.

[identity profile] diatomacearth.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, by god, let's start a posse and take some vigilante action on this issue.

[identity profile] hrafn.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not around the Square in the evening enough to notice the buskers there. (And honestly, I'm so slow to wake up in the morning, that the T buskers don't register much, only about enough for me to notice if it's the Beatles guy, or NOT the Beatles guy.)

[identity profile] closetalker11.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
do buskers "go on tour"?

Thanks very much, folks! Catch me in 20-30 minutes at the Central Square stop!
