best local bundle

I'm considering taking advantage of one of the phone/internet bundle offers that keep cramming my mailbox. Can anyone speak to Comcast's phone service, or Verizon's internet? Or something else entirely?

Right now I have Verizon for phone and Comcast for internet/cable (REALLY basic cable). I'd like to bundle with the most reliable all-round company.

I'm in West Somerville.

Thanks!

I found the best deal by not bundling. We pay around $55 a month for cable w/ 1 year of free Tivo from Comcast. $17 or so for internet from RCN (again it was a promotion) for the first year. I called both companies and just kept asking them what was cheapest.

I've added a couple of tags that may have useful history on the subject.

RCN internet is a decent service, but they raise the price every 6 months.

I've had Comcast's phone service for about 6 months and it's been pretty good. I work from home and spend a good chunk of my day on conference calls, and I haven't had any problems with it.

My phone even kept working during a power outage (not sure how long it stays working, there must be a battery in the modem, but long enough to make a few calls at least).

you totally get soaked when they bundle in phone service -- the cheapest phone service is ~$25 per month, most phone service in the bundles is ~$50 minimum.

I have a bundle with comcast. I've been with them a long time for cable and have generally been happy with the service. I think buying them individually might be ok, depending on the service you want. If you want basic, no frills service, go for it. If you want more options (HD or digital cable, etc.) the bundle might be a better option. I basically never have an outage with Comcast. And when I have a problem they are very responsive and we can usually get it fixed over the phone with some reboots and stuff like that. In fact I spent almost 2 hours on the phone last night with Comcast support because my adobe flash player stopped working. He was very nice, and helpful, despite the fact that it wasn't a Comcast problem (it seems like it might be a problem with our router). I'd recommend them. We considered Verizon Fios but last we checked they were not yet in Somerville.

I had Verizon DSL until just last week - an absolutely terrible experience I ended as soon as my contract ran out. I'm right on the Medford/Somerville line, next to Tufts, and the service was ridiculously inconsistent. Most of the time I was getting speeds closer to dial-up than the 1.5 Mbps I was paying for. Their tech support was similarly terrible.

I've switched to Comcast, and their cable internet is much faster so far, and is significantly cheaper. $20/month for the first 6 months, no contract. $49 or $59/month after that, I forget which. I wasn't interested in a bundle, but I remember the deals they told me about sounded good if I had been interested in getting even just TV -or- phone as well.
