T Pass Sunday Special?

The T used to offer a 2-for-1 special on Sundays.  If you had a pass you could bring a friend along 'for the ride' for free.  I can't find anything on their website.  Anyone know if they still offer this?  Thanks.

No. The Sunday "free guest" benefit disappeared a few years ago, when the MBTA simplified the fare structure, and eliminated numerous exceptions to the basic fare. For example, there used to be a 25-cent surcharge for single-ride payment when boarding between Fenway and Reservoir, and this was eliminated at the same time. (The extra quarter on the fare was not widely known, because these stops were included in the basic Subway pass).

No, this ended with the last fare increase and the universal adoption of Charlie on 1/1/2007.

Although I liked the benefit, it was often a pain to use, since you had to push past the line of people waiting to buy tokens so you could flash your pass and the attendant could open the gate. This always felt rude and impolite.

I, too, miss this -- although, in the day of the official Sunday bring-a-friend benefit, I once had a shady character demand to be my friend so he could ride the bus free.

Anyway, thanks to lax monitoring of the fare gates, one can still observe patrons using this "benefit" about once a minute, every day!

If by "lax" you mean "virtually nonexistent..."

I have repeatedly taken advantage of this "feature" when my girlfriend and I arrive at fare gates displaying the error message "smart card only" and I can't use my (still annoyingly un-smart) commuter rail month pass to go through but she can use her Charlie Card. Just thinking about it now, it's even stupider that it says "Smart Card Only" instead of "Charlie Card Only" since of course only the nerdier bunch is going to know that Charlie Cards and Smart Cards are actually the same thing.

I'm not nerdy?? How many times have I walked further because I didn't think I had a smart card......

Apparently you are not the right kind of nerd!

As far as stupid error messages, I think it's a toss-up between "See Agent" at the turnstile, and "Transaction not OK" at the bus farebox. Neither of them says what went wrong, or has correct information for what to do about it.
