taxi update

just wanted to say thanks to everyone, i now have green cab saved in my phone as well.

i was picked up exactly on time (i called 45 minutes ahead of time to be safe, but was told by the driver if i didn't need to go to the airport and it wasn't a crazy holiday they could pick me up within about five minutes pretty much whenever, so no reservation necessary.) and yes, it was fine that i'm in arlington, as others pointed out.

it was the first cab in ages that a.) did not make me feel like i was on a rickety amusement park ride and b.) the driver didn't spend any of the ride talking on his cellphone. he made polite conversation and gave me a choice of route, an listened when i gave him directions. he also made sure both when picking up and dropping off i wasn't getting out in traffic, a pile of snow, etc.

anyways, i don't take cabs often so i'm glad this worked out so well, thanks again!

Green Cab drivers are great, and I don't know why (I mean, I don't know why they're great, they don't really need to be). Once a cab driver picked me up at the corner of my street (it's a private one-way street, so I usually call the cab to the corner and walk out rather than making them back out). So all he knew was the street I was on, not where I lived.

He started to talk about his best friend;s grandma, she used to live on Gilson, his memories of the place, etc....and eventually we compared notes and discovered he had spent a good bit of his adolescence in the late 50s in my apartment!

That's an unusual one, but seriously, every time I get in a Green Cab, I have a good conversation with the driver.

I have had beyond beyond the nicest experiences with Green Cab, such a great company.

A very professional company. Such a contrast to go to the airport in a Green cab and then come home in who knows what.

I've loved Green Cab for years. Not sure what I'd do without them.

You're allowed to call them from the airport and have them pick you up on the upper floor. You wait a little bit for them to arrive but it's usually worth it.

Just wanted to reiterate that you can call Green Cab to come pick you up @ the airport. I fly often & when I need a taxi to bring me to and/or from the airport, I call Green Cab.

Do you have to pay their way into the airport?

[identity profile] rikchik.livejournal.com 2010-01-05 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The meter starts when they pick you up but sometimes they add a surcharge for tolls on the way in.

I know it's starting to sound like an echo chamber in here, but I just have to add my regard for Green Cab as well. As a rule, I *hate* taking cabs, but I needed to get from my doctor's office to Mt Auburn Hospital rather quickly last week and called Green Cab. They arrived so fast I hadn't even put my coat on yet. The driver was polite and professional and obviously knew the quickest way to get where he was going. I think I was in the emergency room within 15 minutes of making the phone call.

I may have to revise my attitude about cabs.

There are no tolls going into the airport, they shouldn't be charging you anything for that. You do have to pay the outgoing tolls (unless you take the back way). Technically, a non-Boston cabbie is supposed to go to the Massport office and pay the airport surcharge, then pick you up, but that doesn't happen.

As an ex-cabbie, not only do I always call Green to pick me up at the airport, I always tell friends to wait for me on the upper deck and I pick them up there. Picking-up on the pick-up level is for suckers!

If a Green Cab drops me off at the airport, are they allowed to then swing over to the pick-up side and bring someone home?

[identity profile] reverend-jim.livejournal.com 2010-01-05 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they can only pick up at the airport if someone calls. That's why you *do* have to pay the tolls on an inbound airport ride from Green, because non-Boston cabs are required to return empty (and thus would have to pay the tolls out of pocket).

That's not to say that on one's ever dropped off at the airport and managed to steal a fare from the upper deck, but it almost never happens and you take a huge risk doing it.

Add me to the love for Green Cabs.

I was horribly sick and needed to get to the hospital quickly. Cabbie saw how bad I was doing, got me there quickly and didn't even charge me the fare (it was only $7, but still). He was more concerned that I get into the hospital rather than my messing with my wallet.

I wanted to send an e-mail to them...

Pointing to these threads. However, it looks like their web site is messed up. http://somervillecab.com/

I get:
"Fatal error: Call to undefined function: wp_css_dropdownmenu() in /hermes/web04/b1769/moo.southiecab/somervillecabtaxi/wp-content/themes/sleekblack/header.php on line 46"

That one works! :)

Wait, no tolls going to the airport? I took a Green Cab to Logan a few weeks ago, and the cabbie told me there was a $5 toll in addition to the fare on the meter. Man, I hope that wasn't a lie, because if it was, I totally fell for it by tipping him extra.

[identity profile] reverend-jim.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I clarified that in my later post, as my previous statement was confusing. Non-Boston cabs (Somerville, Cambridge, &c.) are allowed to charge the *return* toll on a ride *to* the airport, since they can't pick up at the airport. Otherwise every Logan run would cost those cabbies an extra $5 out of pocket.
