In the next few weeks I'll need last-minute transportation from Davis Square to Belmont. Can you recommend a cab company that's reliable, at least recently? Or tell me of one that isn't? Thank you.

For those of you who may not have heard, the City of Cambridge has recently filed a lawsuit in their second attempt to shut down Uber (the smartphone driven on-demand livery service). You can read more about the lawsuit and previous legal action (which was overturned by the State) here. I personally strongly oppose this lawsuit. I am an occasional Uber customer and do not want this innovative service taken away in the name of "consumer" protection (which is a transparent attempt at protecting local cabbies from competition).

This legal action was initiated by the City Manager on advice of the city legal department and consumer protection bureau. At least one City Councillor (Minka vanBeuzekom) opposes the lawsuit and she has added an agenda item to tonight's City Council meeting to discuss the lawsuit. Her goal is to urge the rest of City Council to oppose the lawsuit and she has invited anyone with an interest in this issue to attend and have their voices heard before the council.

The council meeting begins today at 5:30pm. For more information, please read http://checkthis.com/cjg5. This issue impacts consumers in the entire state and not just consumers within the city of Cambridge.

I'm going to be using two Davis Square locations for my July wedding and I'm wondering the best way to handle parking as neither of the venues have their own lots. My guest list is about 100 people and I'm already planning to urge people to take public transit/park at Alewife or carpool (my reception should be ending at 11pm/midnight at the latest, so the T should still be running).

I can't remember since I moved last year - if people decide they still want to drive their own car, is parking on-street and in the pay lots still free on Sunday nights? If not, does anyone here have experience with businesses letting people park outside of business hours with advance permission? For free or for a small fee?
EDIT: Ron has informed me that residential parking is free on Sundays, so I think that should be good enough for our needs.

Also, the two locations are about .4 miles apart and it's just not enough to justify some kind of fancy-pants transportation. If it's a nice day, most of the wedding party/guesst could probably just hoof it (as it wouldn't even make sense for anyone to move their car). However, we do have a few older people/people with disabilities attending and I'm wondering if anyone here can recommend an extremely reliable cab company - I would likely call in advance, the night before and then the day of to confirm pick up. Otherwise, I'll probably have a few relatives drive from point A to point B and then go back to a lot.

Thanks!

This has gotten to be a real quality-of-life issue in my area. I've got a houseful of college kids across the street who constantly have cabs and other rides coming and going, they never get out in time to wait for their ride, so there's horns honking all the time, whether its Sunday afternoons or even at midnight.

Im sure others have dealt with this before. Is there some way to complain about this so people will know this is not acceptable?

taxi update

just wanted to say thanks to everyone, i now have green cab saved in my phone as well.

i was picked up exactly on time (i called 45 minutes ahead of time to be safe, but was told by the driver if i didn't need to go to the airport and it wasn't a crazy holiday they could pick me up within about five minutes pretty much whenever, so no reservation necessary.) and yes, it was fine that i'm in arlington, as others pointed out.

it was the first cab in ages that a.) did not make me feel like i was on a rickety amusement park ride and b.) the driver didn't spend any of the ride talking on his cellphone. he made polite conversation and gave me a choice of route, an listened when i gave him directions. he also made sure both when picking up and dropping off i wasn't getting out in traffic, a pile of snow, etc.

anyways, i don't take cabs often so i'm glad this worked out so well, thanks again!

if, before i get up in five hours or so, you have a rec for a decent cab company and would like to leave the number in the comments, that would be swell.

i don't need anything fancy, i just need to get from arlington to cambridgeport in the late morning, paying cash, no luggage or critters or special setups. it's just that i always seem to have the WORST luck in just picking a number out of the yellow pages.

thanks!

I have a 5:30am international flight on Sunday to catch at Logan airport. I have never taken a cab to the airport before and I've heard that it can be quite expensive (I live in the Cambridge/ Somerville area). Does anyone have any cab company recommendations or a rough estimate of how much it may cost? Otherwise, I'm debating taking the last train down there and camping out in Logan for a few hours... Thanks.

okay ladies and gents, last time i called upon the collective wisdom of [livejournal.com profile] davis_square to recommend a taxi company, i lived in somerville and just wanted general recs. i now live in arlington (don't know if this changes anything dramatically for cabs), need an early ride to logan, and have yet another taxi question --

can anyone recommend a taxi service aside from metro cab that accepts credit card payments? i have good experiences with green cab but i really need to be able to charge the fare (for receipt/expensing purposes). i could have sworn green took credit cards but i just called them and they said no? *sadface*

i wasn't a big fan of metrocab when i've taken it. so any recommendations for other cab companies would be great.

♥ thanks!

Van cabs?

I was wondering if anybody knew of any cab companies that have van cabs? Also, how much more do they cost?
It wouldn't be going far.

Anyone living on Powder House notice a cab that just sits there all day long with the engine running, the driver sitting inside day in and day out? What is that all about? Kind of sketchy, no?

I need to get to the airport during daylight hours on Friday. Previous trips I have taken the T with no problem.
However, the recent snow plus the promise of more snow on wednesday/thursday/friday (depending on news source) makes the thought of dragging my over-sized suitcases down ice covered and possibly not cleared sidewalks the several blocks to the T station makes me nervous. (I had a hard enough time getting to work today, and that was without extra large suitcases).

I'm thinking some sort of car-type transportation where someone drives me and my luggage to Logan would be a more desirable option. I'm thinking a taxi, but i don't know who to call or how far in advance to try and set this up.
Anyone know of any that are reliable (don't want to miss my flight), safe (young single girl + enough luggage to imply being gone for several weeks, but that's just because I over pack), and cheap-ish (i'm a student but i'm aware it will cost more than the T).

Please help, I don't want to be taken for a ride!

Pursuant to a thread from several months ago, I chose Green Cab to bring me to Logan at the obscene hour of 4:45am this morning. The reservation was made yesterday. They arrived right on time and were very professional. What I feel is more important to this community, they are implementing Hybrid cars. The car was a 2008 Saturn Aura, and was purchased just two weeks ago. I'm not saying that other cab companies aren't as good or doing the same thing. I just wanted to pass along the positive experience. Sorry in advance if this information is a repost.

has anyone here used the green cabs to get to logan at weird hours? i'm just going to call them tomorrow morning and ask for a cab to be at my house at 5am on saturday -- are they dependable for that sort of thing or no? i only ask because i've been flaked out on by cabs before.

thanks for any input.

[edit] wow, thanks everybody for the quick responses!

Kind of a long shot, but does anyone knows of a place where I can find a list of cabstands and their locations in the area? I'm specifically wondering if there is a regular cabstand in Inman Square. (Sorry - only tangentially related to Davis, but you guys are really helpful!)

i just realized my dilemma- i've got a 6:40am flight on thursday and i'm wondering how i'll get there on time, being a slave to the T without a car.

what is the cheapest cab/transportation to get someplace eaaarly?

Hi folks,
I took a cab from Davis Sq to Logan once upon a time. It was with Planet Tran and I absolutely loved the experience. When I found out that I am allowed to call a cab to Logan for a business trip, I checked their website to get another quote - this time it's going to cost me $59. I don't think there is any way I can explain why a trip from Davis Sq to Logan costs $59, so I may have to go with either Yellow or Green.
So which would you recommend? Yellow or Green (or Cambridge)? I'm looking for a morning ride.
Thanks!

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any opinion on Somerville Cabs.  My last and only experience with them was not so good. The cab showed up late , when we got into the cab I sort of thought it was funny that the engine light on the dashboard was lit up. Then, half way to the airport the steering went out and the cab veered into oncoming traffic. My concern is that the City is not regulating the Cabs but I haven't had any experience with them since that incident.

Thanks in Advanced

Just wanted to let people know about a locally owned business that provides car service to Logan airport or other destinations using only hybrid vehicles. The cost is comparable to a cab (I paid $40 versus $38 for a cab, but no tip was needed since it's built into the cost). Also, the online reservation system is ideal if you have to plan something far in advance.

More info here.

can anyone recommend a good (ie, reliable) shuttle service from logan? i have a ride to the airport, i just need a ride home. my plane gets in at 7 or so on a monday night, and if possible i'd like to NOT have to wait half an hour for the shuttle to show up.

what about cabs?  are they all the same price, or are some good to call like if you're stuck somewhere in boston or need to go the airport etc?  thanks!
