if, before i get up in five hours or so, you have a rec for a decent cab company and would like to leave the number in the comments, that would be swell.

i don't need anything fancy, i just need to get from arlington to cambridgeport in the late morning, paying cash, no luggage or critters or special setups. it's just that i always seem to have the WORST luck in just picking a number out of the yellow pages.

thanks!

I've had good luck with Green Cab Co - http://www.greenandyellowcab.com/

I second that. They're the company whose number my partner and I both have saved in our phones.

I don't have Green Cab on speed dial, but I would if I took cabs more often. As a bonus, I've found their drivers to be nice people.

I thought the OP said that she needs to be picked up in Arlington?

That may be a problem. When I used to take cabs they were allowed to drop you off anywhere but could only pick up within their "home" city/town. I assume that Green/Yellow Cabs have Somerville as their home city.

Having said that, I think that some cab companies "make exceptions"...

The Rules

If you call them on the phone, they are allowed to come pick you up at your location no matter what town you are in. They are not allowed to go driving around in towns outside of their home town and pick up people off the curb who are hailing a taxi.

While I don't use cabs that often, and it tends to be of the "call the night before and take me to the airport" situation, I always use Green Cab for that and have never had a problem with them. What have you found them to be particularly awful about? (I've only once or twice, and long ago, used them for more ad hoc things, and I don't recall service problems, though at least one time it was on a snowy morning when everyone was calling cabs so they weren't able to pick up immediately, but did so in a reasonable time frame (and let me know they couldn't pick up immediately when I called)

about 250 times (really) during the last 3 years. Still cheaper than owing a car. I even have my regular drivers who keep coming because I tip well. 99% of the time, the guys know the neighborhood very well and know the shortest routes. The younger ones at times are a bit clueless, but they learn fast. Never had any real problems. Also, going to Logan or South Station, you call them the day before and they come at the agreed upon time SHARP. More than once, they even got there 5 minutes early at 4AM, but quietly waited outside. These guys are reliable!

Thanks.

I may have need of a 5 am cab on Weds (dang shift work). What's the number you use to reach this magical cab service?

617.625.5000. They have other numbers too.

You can book the day before for a particular time if you go to the airport or train/bus station. Otherwise you just call them up and they come to your place (usually, within 10 minutes; I live not to far from Elephant Walk).

Thank you. You may have saved my husband from an oh-dark-thirty wake up to drive me to work.

I'll try the Booking the Day Before trick, because I don't know how coherent I will be the day of.

Looks like I'm a little late on this, but I'd suggest Arlex Yellow Cab. 781-396-4000.

adding this in case anyone comes back and reads this....
we have used ambassador brattle before, but i wouldn't actually recommend them. the only time we use cabs is to go from our house to the airport, usually if it's before the T is running. we have called to schedule pick up time and get a quote on the cost (flat rate, i guess).... twice the cab driver has tried to argue with us about the cost we were quoted and had to call back to the dispatch to confirm it. One guy even said, let's just run the meter and see. That same guy then took the most ciruitous round about, out of the way route to get to the airport. We ended up over in Belmont/Waltham, at one point. WTF. so, yeah, don't recommend them.
