Getting to Logan late at night

I have a 5:30am international flight on Sunday to catch at Logan airport. I have never taken a cab to the airport before and I've heard that it can be quite expensive (I live in the Cambridge/ Somerville area). Does anyone have any cab company recommendations or a rough estimate of how much it may cost? Otherwise, I'm debating taking the last train down there and camping out in Logan for a few hours... Thanks.

Usually about 20-30 dollars from Inman square for me. I take green cab because I'm in Cambridge. I generally call the cab the day before.

I generally always take Green Cab when I have to cab to the airport early in the morning. It should take very little time to get there and you can reserve the cab the night before, I am sure they can give you a ballpark though, 617-625-5000. That early, it really shouldn't be a lot and it should take no time to get there.

I've never taken a cab to the airport, but i have taken cabs (usually green cab) to south station at 5am. I called in the morning and they were there in less than five minutes.

1) Green Cab, for sure. They are the best.

2) It really depends where in Greater Camberville you are. I'm between Teele Sq. and Tufts, and airport runs usually cost me around $35 or $40.

Really? I've had friends stay at airports all over the world overnight, and I don't think I know anyone who's had a bad or scary experience. Uncomfortable, yes. Safety issue, no.

I disagree. I've stayed in numerous airports all over the world for early flights, and never had an issue (aside from an uncomfortable neck and eyes from not getting great sleep).
If the OP has a 5:30 flight, they can check in at 3:30. Last train would get them to the airport about 1. A 2.5 hour wait isn't bad.

Check out the budget traveler's guide to sleeping in airports (available online). I've found that consulting that first is actually a pretty good way to figure out what you might be getting into. Safety seems to rarely be the issue (airports, as it turns out, are pretty heavily patrolled night and day). Comfort and such, however, is an issue.

it is ridiculously expensive. i used to live in davis and now i live in east arlington -- $40-50 is about what i pay.

might be worth calling arlex taxi -- they have guaranteed flat rates to logan and they can tell you over the phone what you would pay before you book. they also can charge your CC and present you with the receipt when you get there... easy pease.

Ok... so I think I will try getting a taxi, probably green cab. I heard it could be more like $50 to get to Logan, whereas $30 is definitely more reasonable. I wasn't too worried about safety either... more the issue of boredom/ everything likely being closed at that time. Thanks for all the input!

take the train to south st diner at midnight, hang out there a couple hours, THEN take a cab to Logan, it'll be less than half the price.

or hitchhike. Only good samaritains would be out at 4 AM.

Make the dispatcher repeat the pick-up time, plus a.m. or p.m. Green taxi has more than once NOT sent the cab I ordered the day before because the dispatcher wrote down the wrong time of day in the computer.

I would call the night before, not the morning of. Three different times over the past 5 years I've tried calling them at 4:30am and not gotten an answer despite letting it ring 20 or so times and calling back. I ended up starting walking and flagged a cab down on the way. Not fun.

I use Green Cab as well. It is about $25 when I've done it.

WARNING: It's a very bad idea not to call in advance (several hours in advance minimum) and request that the cab be at your home at the time desired. While normally in the middle of the night you can call and they say "5 minutes" (and are correct), once I did call at around that hour and they told me "that'll be an hour and a half." I don't know what was up, but I was very glad I had another cab company's number on hand. So, be prepared, call well in advance and book your cab for the time you want it. Every time I've done so, the cab has been promptly on time.

I spent the night at Logan last time I had an ungodly early flight: I just wasn't willing to spend $40 to be cramped and uncomfortable for a half hour. I took a sandwich and a book (though I ended up spending the night journaling). There's a 24-hour Dunkin' Donuts in Terminal C (though as I recall, there's no seating nearby). I'd do it again.

If you have a kind friend with a zipcar membership, that can be the way to go. For wee-hours rentals, zipcars can get down to about $3-6/hr and there is hardly any traffic between here and the airport. Again, requires a kind friend who's willing to get up that early...

Have you thought about a shared shuttle? That's what I am doing for my super early flight. They pick you up whenever you want, even super early, and mine is $17 total. Yes there is the inconvenience of picking up other people, but better than sleeping in the airport all night.
