I need to get to the airport during daylight hours on Friday. Previous trips I have taken the T with no problem.
However, the recent snow plus the promise of more snow on wednesday/thursday/friday (depending on news source) makes the thought of dragging my over-sized suitcases down ice covered and possibly not cleared sidewalks the several blocks to the T station makes me nervous. (I had a hard enough time getting to work today, and that was without extra large suitcases).

I'm thinking some sort of car-type transportation where someone drives me and my luggage to Logan would be a more desirable option. I'm thinking a taxi, but i don't know who to call or how far in advance to try and set this up.
Anyone know of any that are reliable (don't want to miss my flight), safe (young single girl + enough luggage to imply being gone for several weeks, but that's just because I over pack), and cheap-ish (i'm a student but i'm aware it will cost more than the T).

Please help, I don't want to be taken for a ride!

Green Cab is always good. Call that morning or the night before depending on when you're going.

Green cab. Call the afternoon/night before--especially if it's for an early morning pickup. I'm assuming same day would be fine for a later pickup, but keeping in mind that cabs tend to be in higher demand when there's a lot of snow on the ground, I'd probably be sure to call several hours ahead of time.

I can't recommend companies, but for cheapishness, why not split the difference--get a cab to take you those blocks to the station, then take the T from there?

I tagged this taxi. You may want to look at previous posts on this subject.

Always the Green Cab, wherever you are. Call 617-625-5000 up to 48 hours ahead & make a reservation - the call will go out 15 minutes early to make sure a cab is waiting at your chosen time. (Keep your eyes peeled, b/c the call goes out early sometimes the cabbie is there 10 minutes before your reserved time, and they always appreciate it when you're ready to roll.) Green Cab is way safe, the worst that can happen is you get a rude driver who'll talk on his cell the whole ride, or blast Creole talk radio. Don't forget to tip your driver (assuming he's competent)!

Green cab is totally safe and very reliable; they're by far my favorite cab company in the Boston area.

However, just be prepared that a cab from the Davis-ish area to Logan will probably run you in the range of $35 - $40. Just a warning!

I've used Green Cab many times for airport runs, and by far they're the most personable drivers I've run across, to boot.

BTW, if you go by Silver Line to the airport, the number of outside steps and stairs is minimal, but of course there's the lousy transfer from the Red Line to it. You might try a cab to Lechmere, then transfer at Gov't Center to the Blue Line to the airport station?

i lived downtown for awhile, and always used the green-blue line method, which is waaay more irritating than the red-silver line, i'm so glad i can do that now. when you do green-blue, you actually have to transfer TWICE because rather than let you off at the actual terminal, they let you off at the airport stop, so then you have to get off the T and on to a shuttle. red-silver is the way to go.

The transfer from Red to Silver is pretty easy -- just a few stairs up (or an escalator or elevator).

You should keep in mind that if you do Red Line - Silver Line it will be slower than the Red-Green-Blue-Airport Shuttle, plus the Silver Line can get stuck in traffic, so you should leave at least an hour for the trip...although the Red-Silver way is way more comfortable than transferring between 4 lines... I don't know about the Park Street station, but the Government Center does not have an elevator or escalator down to the Blue Line and trying the stairs with a heavy suitcase is no fun, I've done it, I know...

+1 Green Cab

Oh, also, your cheapest cab route to a lot of places in boston will be via somerville ave/longfellow bridge to memorial/storrow. This may or may not hold true for Logan, thoughts?

Why Longfellow Bridge rather than McGrath Highway to Leverett Circle?

Yet another +1 to Green Cab. But expect to pay a small fortune with any cab company. $30-$40.

Here's a vote for Planet Tran (http://www.planettran.com/). They use all hybrid vehicles, the drivers are fantastic (and reliable even at 3 AM), you can book online and pay with a credit card. Also, unless things have changed, they're a locally owned business.

I like them a lot, too, but they're noticeably more expensive than a cab. (It's a price I'm willing to pay, especially coming in to Logan at 2200 and really wanting to Just Get Home, but the OP was definitely thinking about cost concerns.)

Or, if you want to be super cheap, get Green Cab to just take you to the Davis T stop and do the Red Line -> Silver Line from there. The fare + T will probably come out to about, what, eight bucks or so?

You might also look into shared vans. MassPort has a list here. (http://massport.com/logan/getti_typeo_share.html)
