Davis Square Farmers Market opens today!

Subject line pretty much says it all: today is the first day of the Davis farmers market.

It's open Wednesdays noon-6pm in the parking lot at Day and Herbert streets.

Yay!!!

(The Union Square market (Saturdays 9am-1pm in the plaza) starts June 5.)

I'm curious to see what's there so early in the season. At Harvard on Sunday, the only produce were green onions and green garlic. Otherwise, it was seedlings, bread, and meat. I went to a farmers' market in California a couple of weeks ago and it almost made me cry...

YAY!

Just got back...

There were about 8-10 tents set up. Mainly flowers, greens, breads, 2 cheese tents, and 1 meat tent.

Not sure if more farmers are arriving later with more stuff, but I guess the selection so far is what I expected being so early in the season.

Ahhhh, I'm usually at work during the market times, so I was so excited that I had a doctor's appointment today in the square and planned to stop by before going back to the office...

But I got out of the appointment at 11am and found that it didn't open until noon. Buzzkill. Hope I can get back another day.

There is a huge increase of Saturday markets around, for those who don't have access to a market during their workday (I actually shop at Davis on my lunch hour, so it works in my situation). Off the top of my head there is Winchester, Cambridgeport, JP, Waltham, and Union Square Somerville on Saturdays, and a tiny market at Harvard Square on Sundays. The full schedule is at www.massfarmersmarkets.org

But yes, markets tend to end by 6 or so to allow the farmers to get home and farm n' stuff. However, Brookline (not open yet for the season) tends to run until dark for some reason. That's on Thursdays and it's a great market.

I was very happy with the selection at today's market - it's been so warm that all the crops are ahead of schedule, which is a nice treat. Strawberries in May (they had samples but not enough to sell) is unreal!

I was really pumped for this but when I went it was such a let down. Mainly because I wasn't expecting the prices to be 3x what I would pay for the same stuff at Whole Foods. I guess the farmer's markets i've been to before spoiled me with "direct from the farm" prices. I know it's tough to keep a farm going up here and I want to support area as farmers, but hey..i need to be able to pay the bills too! Are there any markets (here or the burbs) that are like..."haymarket" level cheap but still have quality stuff?
