Source for Pallets?

I need a few pallets (no more than 4) for a gardening project. Anyone know a good local source to pick them up? (Preferable free, of course..) I need to schedule it a little since I'll have to rent a zip-van, but I can be fairly flexible.

Thanks!

apparently there is a group of people who go around and pick them up and then sell them back to various companies.... kind of like scrappers....

In my experience of calling the big pallet recycling guys will only come to you and take your excess pallets if you have dozens or even hundreds, and the smaller operators and the pallet recycling brick and mortar locations will only take them if they are the standard 40x48 size.

I'm always looking for leads on how to give away pallets.

By the way I would confirm with the business it is OK to take their pallets before doing so, but it probably is.

The guys we talked to told us they just drive around looking for pallets, load them up in their truck, then sell them back to some recycling center.... They weren't picky about size and were definitely picking up whatever they could find (small or large amounts of them). Can't remember where they said they take them, but I think they were getting either $5 or $10 per pallet they brought in. My husband might remember more details...

If you get any more details, let me know. I brought 10 very good shape pallets in my truck to Pallet World to give away and was turned away. I haven't found any guys like you described through dozens of craigslist free ads. If you are experiencing something different for non standard sizes I'd like to be in touch with your guys. I can give them a steady stream of pallets.
