Garden Redesign

I've got a fairly typical lawn over much of my relatively small (but probably big for Somerville) yard. In other areas, the weeds are winning. So, I'm looking for some help. I'm ready to replace the lawn and tear out the weeds and start over. I'd like to replace it all with something that's orderly and attractive, that adds native (or natively happy) plants and/or flowers that can look attractive year round and that will require less weekly maintenance.

The thing is, I don't know much about plants, and I'm not really interested in becoming an expert. I'd prefer to hire someone to offer suggestions for plants and layout, and help to come up with a plan. Has anyone done this and can recommend someone who can help?

I'd suggest putting in perennials and easy-care shrubbery. and no vines. No matter what you put in, you're going to have to water it regularly in the first couple of months after it goes in, or it will die. Green Goat does a decent job but they seem pricy to me; no experience with other lawn-care folks.

We used Mahoney Winchester landscape design for our small front yard. They diagramed a design after we shared info on size, sun/shade, etc and included specific plants with prices. We didn't go with everything but they helped picked out the actual plants and delivered (fee). We have been happy with the choices as half is sunny and half always shady.

Jocelyn Jones of Generous Earth Gardens (http://generousearthgardens.com/) is local and amazing to work with.

The folks at Pemberton Garden Center will come to your place, suggest ideas and give you an estimate.
