Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF

Kids from the Benjamin G. Brown School "Roots & Shoots" club will be in Davis Square on Monday, October 27th from approx 3:00-4:00 Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF.  Find a kid with an orange UNICEF box, and give them some money!  Kids from the school may also bring UNICEF boxes while trick-or-treating on Halloween night, so have some change waiting by your candy bowl if you want to donate.

While I'm on the topic of trick-or-treating, please allow me to preach a little PSA on behalf of the estimated 7-12% of American children with food allergies.  The choice between a snickers bar and a peanut butter cup seems awesome to someone without allergies.  Not such a great choice for kids allergic to nuts, dairy or eggs.  Buy whatever candy you want as leftovers, but please consider also buying a bag of something allergy friendly.  The fruit flavored things are more likely to be safe  (skittles, starburst, lollipops, mike & ikes, dots, twizzlers, swedish fish, fruit snacks, laffy taffy, nerds, smarties, jolly ranchers)  The dentists of Somerville will thank you, and you will make some kids happy.

I agree about the allergies, but wonder if those alternatives are really any better for your teeth.

When I was a kid, dentists gave out lollipops. These days, it's all stickers and other healthy stuff. (http://www.amazon.com/Dinosaurs-Everything-Junior-Library-Selection/dp/0689869223)

But if you're really concerned about food allergies, it's good to know that a few kids are sensitive to some red dyes. They make special hypo-allergic lollipops, but if you can't find those the yellow and green ones are safe.

The dentist on my block gave out toothbrushes.

... Wow, I'm still irritated by that.

last year I had some leftover glowsticks and some kids really went for those.
