RIP Art Apinian of Savas Shoe Repair

Art Apinian, who ran Savas Shoe Repair (in the little plaza between Starbucks and Orange Leaf), died on November 9. He was only 62 years old. I learned of his death today, when [livejournal.com profile] pbockelman posted it to Facebook.

The shop appears to still be open, but I do not know who is now doing the repairs there.

I'll miss him.

Oh wow, that's terrible. He was quite a character.

Oh my, used his shoe-repair services exclusively since I lived in the area. Did fabulous work. A craftsman. He was, indeed, a "character". Will miss him. I would suspect store is still open to accommodate people who have left their shoes there. I doubt if it will continue on. But I hope so.

From what I understand, other members of the family are also cobblers and are running the shop for the time being.

I was deeply saddened to learn yesterday from my partner (who found out from Paul Bockelman's post on Facebook) that Art Apinian had died.
The last time that I saw him was early September and he didn't look well. I was worried about his health.
I became friendly with him about 20 years ago through his shoe repair shop in Davis Square.
He was a wonderful human being. I loved his humor and philosophizing.
I brought so many people to that shop to meet him - my sisters, my parents, cousins, and friends.
I spent much time in his shop over the years talking and listening to him talk to a wide variety of people who would stop by with their shoes or just to visit.
I used to think that someone should make a documentary about him right there in his shop.
Does anyone know what led to his death?
