1993 is about right. Back then, the Somerville Theatre and Johnny D's were pretty much the only things in Davis that anyone would want to visit at night. There was very little pedestrian traffic east of Dover Street.
The cafe's original location was not at the corner where it is now, but a tiny little storefront next to the theatre entrance. That storefront no longer exists, having been absorbed into an expanded theatre lobby.
A story I've read: it didn't yet have a name, and construction was taking longer than expected. One exasperated partner said to the other, "what is this, the someday cafe?" and that's where the name came from.
