Hair salons

I'm looking for a new hairdresser in the area. Specifically, for some place that does great with color (red in particular), good stylists who listen to you and take your input, and most importantly of all, affordable!! My previous stylist is just too far away and too damn pricey. Doesn't have to be directly on the T, can be within a few towns even of Davis, I have a car and am willing to drive a little bit to get quality haircare here.

Thanks!

I've been going back and forth between Salon Femia and Mario's and have been pretty happy with both. They may not be the best places ever, but they do a good job at a reasonably affordable price -- best bang for my buck, I think, of the places I've tried in the area.

Liquid Hair Studios. I do my own reds at home (Special Effects), but go there for a once a year streaking & color, so that some chunks stay brighter/hold the red longer (now that it is long, I am unwilling to over-process all of it regularly, so this is my compromise). I'd go 2-3 times a year if I could afford it, for touchup. But other redheads of varying shades & styles also get colored there, and the all-over reds are also stunning.

also check the [livejournal.com profile] boston_hair community, but its a virtual Liquid fan club. ;)

I love Salon CU in Ball Sq (on Broadway, near Soundbites and El Guapo). Umberto and Carlo do a great job, and they are fun to talk to as well!
I don't get my hair colored, but I am sure they do a nice job.

I 3rd Salon CU.

i whole heartedly agree with liquid. i've been going there for 3 years and have had a variety of cuts and colors and have never been unhappy. they're prices (depending on who you go to) are pretty resonable.

their not they're (woopsie!)

I've really enjoyed going to Matthew and Liz at Salon Luna in Porter, which (given that it's only a year or two old as a business) is rather affordable and quality. :)

it's only a year or two old as a business

Hmm? I went there about ten years ago, and it was based on a recommendation from a couple of years before that.

[identity profile] chaiya.livejournal.com 2007-02-25 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. When I made an appointment last year, the owner was saying they had just passed their first anniversary. But maybe that's just her owning it or something, then?

[identity profile] syntheticnature.livejournal.com 2007-02-26 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's probably it. I don't remember who owned it when I used to go there. (No particular complaints, I just got tired of haircuts and grew my hair long for a while.)

Anna at Mario's in Davis is absolutely fantastic. I've always gotten a great cut from her, and a couple of really nice body perms. I don't color my hair (as you know) so I can't say how she is with that. She always listens to what I want and is affordable. Truth be told she's so good I start to describe what I want and she knows exactly what I mean.

She is incredibly nice and does a great job :) She looks wonderful for her age too hehe!

Believe it or not, I go to Mario's Salon in Davis - but I only use Alan. He's excellent with both color and my very, very finicky ass when it comes to my short haircut.

I get raves and compliments constantly about my cut, color and style. For a one process color, bleach and wax, he charges me 65 dollars. For this area, it's a fantastic price.

Highly recommend that you check him out.

I had alan do my hair once...highlights that is. I told him I wanted dark reddish streaks and some blonde as well but I ended up with LOTS of blond (this is after me saying i wanted more red than blond) and he said you have to get a trim so i said okay just a slight trim. He barely took off anything and charged me for a full hair cut not even fixing my layers as a regular cut would have done.

Long story short I never went back to him.

[identity profile] bombardiette.livejournal.com 2007-02-26 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my. I'm sorry to hear that! I don't blame you in the least for never going back. I'm fortunate that all of my experiences have been great.

I defected from Liquid to Salon Cu and couldn't be happier. Not sure about color since I don't have that done but if you call and ask for the best person, they'll tell you.

[identity profile] clevernonsense.livejournal.com 2007-02-24 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
heee, I'm in the same boat :) I can't say salon cu is better, but they are a third the price.

[identity profile] watchamacallit.livejournal.com 2007-02-24 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It's nice to have a stylist who actually pays attention to your hair instead of macking on the gay boys and gossiping the whole time.

[identity profile] dreamgirly19.livejournal.com 2007-02-24 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I see Zen @ Marios and she is awesome with my type of hair (curly, not short) since she has similiar hair. She is actually doing my wedding hair too. Everytime I leave I look like a movie star :)

My best friend goes to Judy Jetsons on Mass Ave in Cambridge...some of the people there look freaky but they do KICK ASS HAIR! but its pricey.

Judy Jetson's is great with color. They're on Mass Ave a few blocks down from Porter (toward Harvard).

I love M Salon in Porter on Mass Ave. Personally, I go to Dana, but he's the curly hair expert. And fantabulous decor to stare at while you're being worked on.

If you don't mind my asking, how much does he charge? Right now, I see Andrew at Liquid, who is FABULOUS with my my shorty, curly Jew-fro hair. However, I am kind of lookgin for somewhere closer that is comparable in proce. Andrew is now charging $45 for a cut.

Thanks!

[identity profile] ukelele.livejournal.com 2007-02-24 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been a while since I got my hair cut (last summer...yikes) so I don't recall exactly, but in the $35-$45 range.

And yeah, I went to him because he had this curly hair rep, and he didn't disappoint. (Mine isn't quite Jew-fro (or as I've heard it called "Isro") curly, more Shirley Temple curly, but it's still hard to find anyone who knows what to do with it, much less for a reasonable price, you know? Of course you know...)

Even while living in NY, I came back to this area for hair cuts (Rick) and color (Vivian) at Salon di Carlo in Needham. Of course, this is not incredibly convenient to Davis Square but I feel worth the trip.

I highly recommend Hair Co. in Porter Square. It's in the blockbuster/Pizzeria Uno/Pier I shopping plaza.
Jody Barr is a fabulous colorist and hair cutter. You can walk in or make an appointment. I 've been going to her for years and she has a loyal following. She does men too and she's very skilled.
