Christmas Tree Recycling

The city of Somerville does Christmas tree recycling starting January 7. Does anyone know if this is a one week only event or if they will still be collecting Christmas trees next week?

not an answer to your question, but..

on the tree removal topic, Wilson Farm in Lexington accepts x-mas trees for recycling until Jan 14th I think.

Does Somerville definitely recycle/compost them or do they get added to the regular trash?

Oh, that's very useful, thanks! We're planning on taking ours down tonight and were discussing this.

I tried I tried and tried and tried to find updated information about this service last week. I was having a new years party and wanted my tree gone. I figured the trash guys would just bypass it if it wasn't tree recycling week and then I would just store it in the back yard.

The trash guys took it. I guess my tree is in a landfill somewhere. The press release timing on this was bad. Oh well.

The last couple of years they collected trees throughout January.

I don't expect it to be any different this year.

Just please remember to remove the Christmas Tree garbage bag. They will NOT take trees with the bag on.

This press release on the Journal website says "Beginning the week of Jan. 7, and running through the end of January, residents may place their trees curbside on their regular trash collection day for pickup."

Thanks for this clarification. I was just reading this and thinking, D'oh! my trash collection was this morning and I missed it.
This is great news.

I just watched the trash guys come and put my trees in the trash. It's 1/22, so I guess it didn't run through the end of January. Sigh. I wonder if anyone actually has a record of their tree being picked up in a special truck?

Why do people ask these questions here instead of calling 311?
Because it works: DSLJ members have the answers!

Even though Ron monitors the city site pretty closely, I think I'm just going to add him to the press release distribution list. If he deems the information group-worthy, he can post it here.

Umm, no, I don't think I want to be the semi-official conduit between the city (you) and this community. But I too am curious how the Journal got a more complete press release than the city website did.

If you want more info on where this happened, feel free to e-mail my lj e-mail address and I'll tell you where I am.
