Travel Agents

Can anyone recommend a good travel agent in the area? I don't usually use one, I'm not sure if anyone does anymore, but I'm trying to plan a honeymoon. (Why are they called honeymoons? I just wrote that out and it looked dumb).

Well, there is that Travel Agency near Magpie. Not sure how great they are, but maybe you can judge that after you first meeting with them?

Baker Travel 10 stars all the way. used them twice, second time they called me back and said they saved me even more $$$. You can go there get some prices and travel books and then try it yourself (which I've done) but each time there's is always cheaper. Good Luck and Happy Honerymoon

obviously i'm biased, but i was always told it comes from greek tradition... in some weddings at the reception the couple exchanges a spoonful of honey (the sweetness of love and marriage), and the first moon/month of marriage is the sweetest, hence honeymoon. this could be totally wrong though.

My understanding is that it's in fact a Northern European tradition, where it was believed that in the month (moon) following the wedding, when the fist child was to have been conceived, that the drinking of copious amounts of mead (fermented honey and water) would ensure the birth of a son.

Now, it may easily be that both things are true.

I used Cambridge Travel (I think that's what they're called - it's the agency in the same building as the Uno's at Porter) for a trip to China and was able to get the flight + dealing with the visa for less than I could get the same thing on my own. They specialize in trips to Asia, so they have a number of good deals there. We also talked to them about a subsequent trip to Switzerland, which they could have helped us plan but we would not have saved money on it by doing so.

So your mileage may vary depending on where you're going - if you can, search for a place that specializes in the region, especially if you're traveling internationally.

When I went on a trip to the Middle East in August I went through Baker Travel, and they found me a fare at least $200 cheaper than I could find on my own. However, I also called them a couple of days ago asking about domestic flights and they couldn't save me any money. I think it's definitely worth calling around to different agencies to see what they can do.

My sister-in-law-equivalent is a fantastic travel agent: Leeanne Locke, at the Travel Collaborative [617) 497-7400] at the corner of Beacon and Washington Streets in Somerville. She is really great, and I don't just say this because I love her.

Similarly, the first month after a baby is born is called the "babymoon" and is traditionally the time that the mom spends doing nothing but being with her baby, getting to know him/her and developing a bond. Not that most modern moms really get the opportunity to do that, alas.

I think that's a much newer marketing creation (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=babymoon&btnG=Google+Search), and I've most often seen it applied to pre-baby couples, but not exclusively.

Another vote for Baker Travel. Mary Baker has been there for years (she used to work for another local agency, then opened her own quite a few years ago). They're the best. And even when you don't save money, you get the convenience of them handling the details for you, and a lot of helpful advice.
