I live close to Powder House as well and we lost power around 3:30ish. It was creepy because at that time of night you can hear every little noise so when the power came back on I heard all of our stuff through-out the house powering back on.
The power went off about 4:25am this morning (yeah being in the shower when it goes off is fun). The power outage lasted in some areas for a few minutes and for others much longer. I know it stretched out down Broadway to Mcgrath and then again I could see more streets dark as I went up 93 at about 5am. I am working on finding out the cause at this time.
I just talked to a CSR at NSTAR. She was a very nice woman but had surprisingly little information about the outage causes or status. She could only report that a bunch of streets in Somerville were effected and the calls started coming in around 4:30.
lost power way down highland near central, for about twenty or thirty minutes. i didn't realize until i woke up and the clock on my stove was blinking.
Lost it in lower Winter Hill near East Somerville sometime after 2:30 (when I remember waking and seeing the clock still on), and it came on around 7:35 just as I was walking out the door. The traffic light at McGrath and Broadway was still out when I came to it a few minutes later, with staties directing traffic. An NStar truck was there doing work underground- not sure if that was a cause, or a remedy...
Lost it on Broadway near Teele Square. I could see from my window (on Farragut and Broadway) that streetlights were out from about Teele Square Auto to the intersection of Broadway and Curtis and on all of the abutting side streets between those to places. The outage went from about 3:30 to 5 am. When I called NStar they said it was a problem with "high voltage equipment in the area."
By sheer coincidence I happened to have woken up a few minutes before it happened, which is good, because my alarm does not have a battery backup.
NSTAR reports that the outage is due to "damaged equipment" and that all areas where power has not yet been restored (primarily East Somerville)should be back up on the grid by approximately 12 noon.
Re: NSTAR Says All Power Should Be Back On by Noon
I lost it around 4:30 as well, I'm on central at broadway. Looking out my back window, it looked at though people on adams street still had power, which is interesting given all the other further away places that lost power.
I happened to be awake when the cut happened. It was pretty clear that the power was out between Broadway and Powderhouse from the rotary to at least Mason St. I could see light on the other side of Broadway and on the Tufts campus (though the latter might have been backup safety lighting). The lights on the powder house were still burning bright (clearly visible over the roof tops with no light between here & there!).
Update: Some sections of the city have had their power restored, but not all. NSTAR now estimates that repairs to damaged high voltage equipment will be completed by 2:30pm. Once repairs are made they will be able to restore power to affected areas.
Lost it on Cameron near the Cambridge border. My backup cat autoengaged, climbing up on the bed and initiating purr sequence, so I fell back asleep immediately.
Lost it at around 4:30 on Burnham St. near the Powderhouse rotary. Put in a call to NSTAR and laid awake until about 5:00, when it came back on. I cannot sleep without my white noise (fan), and the eerily quiet coupled with my worry about not waking up to my cell phone alarm kept me awake. I'm glad it was up and running quickly in my area.

Anyone see a transformer blow up or anything?
