dude, they gave best pet store to Big Fish, Little Fish. I was walking by it tonight and my first thought was 'Wow. I won't trust any other award they give out, after seeing that."

And now, I have been proved right.

If there's only one contestant, it's an easy choice (seriously, are there any other pet stores in Somerville?).

My husband and I were discussing this while waiting at Ball Sq. Cafe yesterday and reading the Best of winners posted on the window. If you count pet accessory stores like Stinky's and Dogma and Catma Too, then yes. But purely animals? I think Big Fish is the only one.

Technically, you have to go to either side of Cambridge - there's Petco at Alewife and on First Street.

That wouldn't be "best of Somerville" then.

Thanks for letting me know.

Hey, I figured it was important to litter this post with as many useless comments as possible!

Does that mean that if the city had only one day care, and that day care turned out to be run by a pedophile, that it would still be okay for them to endorse that day care just because it's the only one in the city?

Seriously, I think at some point you just have to drop the category.

Sure, it stands to reason that they'd drop the category in that case. But what are you trying to say about the owner of Big Fish Little Fish here?

m00n's trying to point out that the animal care in there is abysmal. I've seen dead feeder mice in the tank (they don't count as a 'pet', I believe). I know he was tossing dead rats into the trash, though I believe he was stopped disposing of them that way due to legal complaints. He smokes in the store. Cages are dirty and often not cleaned for a day or two after they ought to be.

It might be the best Somerville has to offer, but it's certainly not the Best of Somerville.

I know BFLF is a pretty rotten place. Went once, walked out without buying anything, never went back. But damn, that analogy is big guns right there. Should be used sparingly. When it's thrown around willy-nilly, geesh, it feels like a lawyer trying to make a constitutional case out of a jaywalking ticket.

I think it is the case that the pet store that was on McGrath Highway (assuming it was McGrath and not O'Brien) that burnt down this past summer, near the Sav-Mor Discount Liquor Store, was technically just barely in Somerville. I do believe it hasn't re-opened. Yeah, I'm being real helpful, sorry.
