Tom Champion stepping down

Just discovered this article on the journal blog. It's the end of an era.

Oh wicked cold day,
Move the cars please, one more time,
Adieu, Tom Champion.

First Conan is out, then Coakely, now Tom... WHEN WILL IT END????

Maybe we can lure him back to [livejournal.com profile] davis_square now?

[identity profile] djdreilinger.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe he'll start a prospect_hill LJ group.

[personal profile] ron_newman 2010-01-20 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope he'll participate more in DSLJ once he's no longer a city employee. I wish him well.

Anyone know what 'Bluewater Holdings' are or what they hold?
Tom amswers that here:
Bluewater provides green, low-cost, energy efficient water systems solutions — which is marketese for “they offer a range of water-related services, from cleaning septic tanks to refitting steam pipes, using modern, no-dig technology.” They’ve got some exclusive technologies that no one else can offer, and are the only company certified to renovate drinking water pipes without opening walls or digging holes to do it.

They have a lot of private-sector customers for whom they do septic and drain work, but the fact that they can fully rehab crumbling water infrastructure without digging, and for less money, should mean that they have a promising future doing work for cash-strapped cities and towns.

AII!!!

Could the week in politics even GET any worse at this point? Sigh.

[identity profile] geekpixie.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I think they need to hold voice auditions as well as interviews when filling the position :)

[identity profile] lizzielizzie.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
This is sadder than the election results. *weep*

[identity profile] rmd.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
we'll have to get a new techno 'snow emergency' mix with the new Voice Of Somerville.

[identity profile] pierceheart.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Get him to run for office!

Although, come to think of it, he is liked too much to do something like that to him.

Well, it could be worse.

[identity profile] nvidia99999.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Ron Newman could step down from his Mod position here! :)

Re: Well, it could be worse.

[identity profile] pekmez.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe Ron should apply for Tom Champion's job.

Re: Well, it could be worse.

[identity profile] tom-champion.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Ron already has far more power and influence as DSLJ mod. Dir/Comm for the City would be a step down for him.

Re: Well, it could be worse.

OMG you're back!

Re: Well, it could be worse.

[personal profile] ron_newman 2010-01-21 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Welcome back Tom! Glad to see that you undeleted your LJ account.

(Edit: on closer inspection it looks like you actually created a new LJ account rather than undeleting the old [livejournal.com profile] tomchampion one. In any event, I'll enjoy seeing you around here more.)

[identity profile] chanaleh.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I nominate [livejournal.com profile] derspatchel.

Re: Well, it could be worse.

[identity profile] tom-champion.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not a bad idea -- but he's such a nice guy. Why would you want to turn him into a political hack like me?

Certainly, he's got the writing chops -- and there's no doubt he could handle the Connect CTY mass notification system (all that radio experience, dontchya know), but this job has some major downsides and it's a huuuuge time-sink.

Who's going to write new episodes of Red Shift and The Frank Cyrano Byfar Hour if derspatchel is cranking out press releases in the bowels of city hall?

Re: Well, it could be worse.

[identity profile] chanaleh.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
But we could get him a manual typewriter! And a cigar!

Re: Well, it could be worse.

[identity profile] nvidia99999.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
What are you guys talking about? Can we have a little "Previously on..." for the folks who are not familiar with any of this?

[identity profile] qwrrty.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
They're talking about The Big Broadcast of October 30, 1938 (http://www.huboftheuniverseproductions.com/events_bigbroadcast.html), a production last fall at the Somerville Theater, written by [livejournal.com profile] derspatchel and starring Tom Champion in a crucial role.

Re: Well, it could be worse.

[identity profile] nvidia99999.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I had no idea.

Re: Well, it could be worse.

[identity profile] fangirl715.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
He's managed it w/his previous day job, so why not with this one? (Besides, he needs a job, and considering his place in the cultural life of Somerville, surely something could be worked out for both his and the city's benefit?...) Anyway, YOU will be greatly missed around these parts, although I'm glad to hear you're not abandoning the PMPR/T@F mafia any time soon. ;-) (BTW, I'm Robin, the PMRP Makeup Maven, in case you didn't recognize the LJ handle.)

Re: Well, it could be worse.

[identity profile] yakshaver.livejournal.com 2010-01-22 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the man himself! Good luck with your new venture, Tom.

[identity profile] plumtreeblossom.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
But it won't be a snow day without him!!

I hope he continues to perform with Theatre@First/PMRP. Then folks can get their occasional Tom fix.

[identity profile] trowa-barton.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, he IS still doing "Dracula" to the best of my knowledge since I saw him at rehearsal last night.

And Frank Cyrano would be honored to have Mr. Champion on his show, I'm pretty sure of it.

We'll burn that bridge when we come to it.

This is really a cover. Expect to see Craigslist ads for recording your answering machine message as well as ringtones. You'll know it's the Somerville autodialer calling when your phone says "This is Tom Champion and the City of Somerville is calling you".

He will next appear on "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" when Carl Kassel retires for good.

Has anyone used A Tom Champion recording

[identity profile] nvidia99999.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
as ring tone yet?

[identity profile] spacegirlkate.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
...does this mean they're gonna cancel winter? 'Cause it isn't really winter without Tom Champion With The City Of Somerville phone calls.

[identity profile] obie119.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope he still will lead an Illuminations Trolley! I saw him and it was like, whoa, celebrity sighting :) Good luck Tom - sounds like a great new company!

[identity profile] genesayssitdown.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] tom-champion.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently I am a hack, a ham and a sheepdog.

To my knowledge, this was the first time you were mentioned here on DSLJ.

[identity profile] djdreilinger.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I was a little concerned about the overabundance of similes. You were also briefly a therapist.
