I hope he'll participate more in DSLJ once he's no longer a city employee. I wish him well.
Anyone know what 'Bluewater Holdings' are or what they hold? Tom amswers that here:
Bluewater provides green, low-cost, energy efficient water systems solutions — which is marketese for “they offer a range of water-related services, from cleaning septic tanks to refitting steam pipes, using modern, no-dig technology.” They’ve got some exclusive technologies that no one else can offer, and are the only company certified to renovate drinking water pipes without opening walls or digging holes to do it.
They have a lot of private-sector customers for whom they do septic and drain work, but the fact that they can fully rehab crumbling water infrastructure without digging, and for less money, should mean that they have a promising future doing work for cash-strapped cities and towns.
Welcome back Tom! Glad to see that you undeleted your LJ account.
(Edit: on closer inspection it looks like you actually created a new LJ account rather than undeleting the old tomchampion one. In any event, I'll enjoy seeing you around here more.)
That's not a bad idea -- but he's such a nice guy. Why would you want to turn him into a political hack like me?
Certainly, he's got the writing chops -- and there's no doubt he could handle the Connect CTY mass notification system (all that radio experience, dontchya know), but this job has some major downsides and it's a huuuuge time-sink.
Who's going to write new episodes of Red Shift and The Frank Cyrano Byfar Hour if derspatchel is cranking out press releases in the bowels of city hall?
They're talking about The Big Broadcast of October 30, 1938 (http://www.huboftheuniverseproductions.com/events_bigbroadcast.html), a production last fall at the Somerville Theater, written by derspatchel and starring Tom Champion in a crucial role.
He's managed it w/his previous day job, so why not with this one? (Besides, he needs a job, and considering his place in the cultural life of Somerville, surely something could be worked out for both his and the city's benefit?...) Anyway, YOU will be greatly missed around these parts, although I'm glad to hear you're not abandoning the PMPR/T@F mafia any time soon. ;-) (BTW, I'm Robin, the PMRP Makeup Maven, in case you didn't recognize the LJ handle.)
This is really a cover. Expect to see Craigslist ads for recording your answering machine message as well as ringtones. You'll know it's the Somerville autodialer calling when your phone says "This is Tom Champion and the City of Somerville is calling you".
He will next appear on "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" when Carl Kassel retires for good.
I hope he still will lead an Illuminations Trolley! I saw him and it was like, whoa, celebrity sighting :) Good luck Tom - sounds like a great new company!
Apparently I am a hack, a ham and a sheepdog. http://www.boston.com/yourtown/news/somerville/2010/01/by_danielle_dreilinger_globe_c_18.html?comments=all
