Community workshop opening near Union Square in June - currently in fundraising & setup mode

(cross-posting to a couple of other local LJs)

Periodically, I see posts here asking, "Is there somewhere I can go to do this one thing with a table saw?" Very soon, the answer will be "Yes, if you can schlep your project down to the Union Square area."

A non-profit community workshop/craft space called Artisan's Asylum is opening near Union Square in mid-June - there are actually 2 different spaces: a small classroom/studio a couple blocks from Union Square, and an ENORMOUS workshop very close to Brickbottom Studios (near the intersection of Washington and Rt 28, also close to Union).

They are currently raising funds to get the larger space fully equipped in time for the June 12 opening - the larger equipment (including a CNC mill - VERY HEAVY), currently located in the smaller space, needs to be moved by professionals; funds will also go towards buying materials to finish furnishing the spaces, and buying additional toys. I mean tools.

They currently have a nice set of tools for metal working, wood working, sewing, and electronics, and will be acquiring more - and setting up a kitchen to teach cooking classes, too. They will also offer classes to teach use of the tools, and a variety of project-oriented classes taught by local crafters and cooks and photographers and etc.

They will have monthly membership rates and also daily drop-in rates. And the ability for people to rent their own workspace within the larger one.

They have been getting a lot of help getting started from sprout and a lot of other local folk, including me, which is how I know all about it.

I've been at several of their planning meetings, and I am very impressed at the organization and thoughtfulness going into the project. It will be a really great resource to have, so if you are at all interested, please check out the website, and make a note that we are planning an opening event for June 18!

The best way to learn more is through their website, http://artisansasylum.com/ or Facebook.

EDITED 6/1 to correct date for opening event. Will be June 18, not June 12.
