Biking Community?

I know Somerville has a huge biking community and am trying to do some research on that (the memories are all pretty old). I'm in the midst of my first bike purchase but would love to know more about community events, rides, groups, websites, etc about biking in and around the area (I live in Davis). Thanks!

Come to Redbones tonight for the outdoor Bike Party!

Massbike with their event calendar is a good place to start.

BostonBiker.org lists many events too.

Bike Rides for Ordinary People runs easy weekend urban and suburban rides, often starting in nearby Arlington.

On the http://bostonbiker.org page that Ron linked to, pay special attention to the Boston Biker Guides (about mid-page, on the left-hand side); tips for new riders, how to deal w/ winter riding, etc.

We don't do much with 'memories' here in [livejournal.com profile] davis_square but we have lots of posts with the bicycle tag.

Depends on what you're after, I suppose, but there are a few options.

Team Luna Chix (http://teamlunachix.com/boston_mountain_bike) - I don't ride with them, obviously, but Roz is awesome. I hear they have good rides but don't think they're particularly close to Davis.

Team Quad (http://blog.teamquad.org) - Based out of Arlington. Haven't ridden with them yet. I hear most of them are cool but some are a little too competitive.

Good luck!

(Deleting original posts is for suckers!)

Oh, and if you don't mind riding mutated bikes and basically getting involved in the local Burning Man/nerds-who-build-lots-of-shit/whatever scene, SCUL (http://www.scul.org) should be right up your alley. I believe they ride every Saturday night except during the winter. If it sounds like something you'd be into, go for it. I'm pretty sure some rides are near Davis but don't know how many.

The Cambridge and Somerville Bicycle Committees each have one spring ride and one fall ride. Unfortunately, you just missed the spring rides (they were on May 22 and 23 this year). Watch http://CambridgeBikes.org and http://SomervilleBikes.org later this summer for announcements of the fall rides.

(I'm a member of the Somerville Bicycle Committee.)
