Wanted: Used Mountain/City Bike Near Davis

Before I attempt to tackle CraigsList, I thought I'd ask if anyone in the neighborhood happens to be selling a small-ish used mountain bike, or knows of a source that might be. Nothing fancy necessary; I'm not a serious cyclist, just want it for getting around town, the bike path, etc. I'm a short-ish female (a small men's bike would be fine) without a lot to spend, but my needs aren't extravagant, either.

I seem to remember a man off Holland who sold refurbished bikes out of his garage. I don't remember the address, but does anyone know if he's still there?

Thank you for any leads on bikes in the 'hood. I hate the idea of having to find a ride to suburbia to get one. You can reply here or catch me at moonstonewater@yahoo.com.

The bike shop on Powderhouse circle (right near East Asia) sometimes sells used bikes. They don't have a large selection, but it's worth asking just in case.

the owner is really cool, too.

The bike place on the left-hand-side of Elm Street as you're going from Davis Square to Porter Square (I think it's called Ace Wheelworks) sells used bikes (or, at least, they did back when I was looking for one in 2000).

In addition, Ace rocks. For the most part the staff are really knowledgeable and friendly, they recognize regular customers (and not just by the Wheelworks sticker on your bike if you bought it from them), and they'll throw in free/cheap parts or labor on occasion if you do enough business there. And they have tons of stuff. They can occasionally get really crowded in the summer, particularly on weekends, and you can run into not the best staff at those times, but aside from that they are my warm fuzzy pile of bike love. (Yeah, I've spent a lot of time there...)

But I agree with the folks above that Tyler at Paramount in Powderhouse is also cool. Even if his bikes are more high-end than the original poster wants, he's very helpful, good at answering questions, good place for maintenance.

Yup

They do have a few used bikes. I'd check out their sister store in um...belmont (?) which has a much larger selection as well.

Yup, Belmont by the Trapelo Rd. and Rte. 60 intersection.

That store also has the Annex, where they have a continual clearance sale -- new bikes, but last year's model or whatever. That's where I got my current bike at about 25% off. Mmm.

Try these folks. They are cool, from what I hear, and they usually have some cheapish bikes. Not davis square, quite, but not distant either:

I have a bike that I'd like to get rid of. It's old, it has a flat tire, and some rust. But hey, it's free, and if it didn't have a flat tire, it still would get you from place to place in the city. I have a bike rack I can give you with it, if you take the bike. Let me know if you're interested.

If she isn't interested, I am! I am desperate for a new bike since I gave away my last one last year when I went travelling.

And Mare, pass along any bikes you reject to me. :)

I don't know how much you're looking to spend, but Patrick and I got our bikes at Toys R Us for about $70.
