This Sunday: SomerStreets 'Monster Mashed-Up' and Oktoberfest on Somerville Ave

The final SomerStreets festival of the year will be Monster Mashed-Up this Sunday afternoon on Somerville Avenue, from Porter Square to Union Square.

The street will be closed to car traffic, and will feature live entertainment, "Monster Mash-Up" DJs, a costume parade, chainsaw pumpkin carving demonstrations by Artisan's Asylum, Ghosts of Somerville at the Milk Row Cemetery, a craft fair, and an Oktoberfest at the Union Square end.

Here's a map of all the activities.

I'm looking forward to this, but somebody really needs to explain to the event organizers the precise meaning of the term "cornhole". I don't think a "cornhole competition" is what it sounds like.

Just because *you* get the 7th grade giggles doesn't mean that Cornhole (http://playcornhole.org) isn't a legitimate sport.

Yeah, this is literally the first time I've heard the term "cornhole" used to describe tossing a bean-bag tossing game and I spent my teenage years in Vermont getting dragged to county fairs. Not that I think the game didn't come first, but the name changed for a reason.

I happened to come across this poster yesterday:

Perhaps it is, but growing up in northern rural NH, that kind of game was a "beanbag toss", and "cornhole," well...let's just say my parents are old-school Yankees with highly colorful vocabularies, shall we?
