Somerville Stop & Shop to open June 21

According to this Boston.com article, the Stop & Shop on Alewife Brook Parkway (site of the old Johnnie's Foodmaster) will have a grand opening on June 21. Hooray!

It's (almost) time ... to Stop and Shop!

I know a few people who will be pleased to have something at that area.

I didn't realize the Foodmaster at that location had closed, but I'm glad it's being replaced with another supermarket. When the Foodmaster near my old house closed, we got a Rite-Aid instead, which was not quite as useful.

THANK JEEBUS.

The entire 10-store Foodmaster chain closed last November. (Click on the "local food" tag to see posts about it back then.)

Six of the stores, including Beacon Street in Somerville near Inman Square, are becoming Whole Foods. Of those six, I think only the one on Beacon Street in Brookline has reopened so far.

Two are becoming Stop & Shop -- one in Medford (already reopened in January) and this one in West Somerville (opening June 21).

I don't know what's happening to the other two (Lynn and Whitman).

i really hope this store is more successful at carrying some of the brands i like than the one in Arlington was...

What brands are those? It may be a good idea to befriend the store manager soon after it opens.

I wonder why Whole Foods is moving so slowly. They are only just now starting construction on the Beacon Street location. Makes me wonder if the move was more to put a competitor out of business than to actually expand.

I noticed that only two weeks ago did they finally prohibit public parking in the Beacon Street (Somerville) Foodmaster lot, reserving it for construction vehicles. That's a good 6 months after the store closed.

Given that they're building out several stores at once, I suspect it may make sense for them to use the same design/build team on multiple stores sequentially rather than trying to manage six remodels at once.

They're still working on the Arlington store, too.
