Looking for a decent, somewhat stylish cane

So it's come to the point where I'm going to need a cane or walking stick at least part of the time. I'd like to avoid something aluminum, and would prefer something wood, solid, and at least reasonably good looking. Any suggestions on where I'd look? I prefer Davis, but having looked around, haven't found anything, so I'll expand out to, oh, anywhere T accessible really.

I've seen you around various mutual friends' LJs and whatnot...I don't recall offhand who you are, so I'm not sure whether you're part of the crowd that frequents Arisia and other science-fiction conventions, Renfaires, and that kind of thing. But at every SF con, there's usually at least one person in the dealer's room that has some sort of attractive assortment of handmade canes, walking sticks, and that sort of thing, and who would likely do custom work if they don't have what you want right then and there. I don't know how useful of an answer that might be for you, because I don't know whether the items in question are simply decorative, costume items, or whether they could actually be used for their apparent intended purpose. Next Arisia is also most of a year away, and my guess is you would want something sooner than that.

But that's my best guess, if you want something that's wooden and attractive, rather than a straightforward medical appliance.

+1 to this suggestion!

Yeah, I figured as much. Wasn't sure if you might travel to conventions other places, which might make buying such a thing happen sooner rather than later. Oh well, it was worth a shot? Sorry it didn't turn out to be a useful answer. Good luck.

This is the Arisia '13 dealer list. Do you recognize any of the names of dealers who might sell what the OP is looking for?

Unfortunately not. Except for the handful of dealers I know personally (Columbine of Sunspot Designs, Nancy L. of "Nancy Buttons", and so on) I can't usually associate any particular business name with what they sell. Dealer's Room at any con, for me, is usually just "A bunch of people selling clothes and costume stuff, and a bunch of other people selling books and games and gaming paraphernalia." Often as not, I buy something--but I'll be darned if I can ever identify a specific person I bought something from a second time, unless I knew them socially beforehand.

Maybe someone in the Arisia LJ community would know.

I got a cane I am quite fond of at Leavitt and Pierce in Harvard --- it's wooden with a decorative but still comfortable head, and solid. This was a number of years ago, but it seems like the sort of thing they would still carry if they carried them then.

Seconding Leavitt and Pearce.

If you don't find what you'd like there, I've been looking for excuses to do this kind of woodworking. Draw up what you'd like, and we can turn out something nice.

I'll be at a local Renaissance Fest next weekend, and there's quite often someone selling classy, handmade walking canes. If I see any dealers with that sort of thing, I'll pass along their contact information.

Just don't get one that looks like a light sabre (http://www.loweringthebar.net/2013/06/tsa-questions-chewbaccas-lightsaber.html)

You just want to perfect your 3rd base impression, right?

Similar to Cons and Faires, craft shows.
That's the sort of thing my mother's been getting her sticks at for a while now. Maybe the sowa open market?
