Can anyone recommend sources of information or legal aid relating to signing up for MassHealth / Medicaid? Seeking someone with knowledge on the current system/requirements, to help a person with zero income but some assets renew their enrollment in the least-damaging way.
Pointers toward nonprofits that answer this kind of question, or anything similar, would be appreciated.

This happened two years ago, but her husband only recently found out the details and published a heartbreaking article in yesterday's Boston Globe Sunday Magazine.

(Updated Dec 20)

If you are on MassHealth, and you get your primary care from either Harvard Vanguard (such as the one over the Au Bon Pain) or Cambridge Health Alliance (such as the one next to the defult Elephant Walk outside of Porter Square), there are some VERY BIG CHANGES coming with VERY IMPORTANT CONSEQUENCES.

If you are such a person, you should have received a package in the mail from MassHealth. It's a big white packet with a green stripe down one side. It says on the outside "This package contains important information about your health plan." Sure does. You'll want to read yours.

I just this afternoon called Harvard Vanguard, Cambridge Health Alliance, and MassHealth to get some clarity and make sure I understood the following correctly. (Edit to add 12/20: I have also now spoken to Neighborhood Health Plan, and Tufts Health Plan, which is running the ACO plans described below. I have also done a bunch of research online.)

From March 1, 2018 on, Harvard Vanguard (more accurately, the whole Atrius Health system, of which they're a large part) and Cambridge Health Alliance (edit to add: an a bunch of other, less local, healthcare systems) are cutting over to a new system for MassHealth patients. To continue being a patient there, you will have to be on one particular Atrius-specific or CHA-specific health insurance which no almost no other health care providers take.

That is, if you get your primary care through the Davis Square Harvard Vanguard, you will have to get all your other care from Atrius, too, and a select list of approved hospitals. Your Atrius-specific insurance will not cover care at specialists anywhere else.

This includes psychotherapy and psychiatry. For psychotherapy and psychiatry, there is an additional short list of external approved providers. This got long. )

Alex Foster. Kevin Sullivan. Sean Curtis. They are all gone. Opioids took them one by one. They had shared a place called Somerville. A new STAT documentary takes an intimate look at a group of friends who grew up together, and who each fell prey to an epidemic.

This is actually the sign of fall that usually starts to put me in the mind of the upcoming cold weather--time to get your flu shot! Not only does this protect you from the misery of aches and fever and missed work days, it's a community service to get a shot.

We have neighbors who are getting cancer treatment, and they are counting on you to help us keep the flu away. When my nephew was getting leukemia treatments, I was so worried he'd get an otherwise-preventable infection that would be so hard on him. But--thanks to the neighbors, he was ok and now in remission (and all his vaccinations are back up to speed).

So please--for yourself, for your vulnerable neighbors--get protected.

Schedule available here: https://www.somervillema.gov/events/2017/10/05/free-flu-shot-clinic

Patch.com article linked here: Somerville Meeting to Address Proposed Davis Square Medical Marijuana Dispensary is reporting there is a neighborhood meeting this coming Monday to discuss proposed dispensary at 245 Elm St, currently housing Family Dollar.

Anyone know where the permit application can be located, or any official meeting notice? [EDIT: see meeting notice below] Proposed operator is Garden Remedies which just opened their first location in Newton just a week ago, on Nov 15.

With Question 4 passing, it's important to note the transition process & timeline for retail dispensaries. As I understand it, the ballot initiative states that retail licenses will be issued by the new Cannabis Control Commission by Jan 1, 2018, with existing medical dispensaries being given preference for retail licenses. If this deadline is missed and there is no framework in place to issue licenses by that date, then all medical dispensaries are automatically allowed to sell to the public.

EDIT 11/24: The meeting is now on the official Somerville calendar, linked here: Community Meeting: Medical Marijuana Dispensary. The meeting is Monday, Nov 28th 2016, 6:00 PM at Community Baptist Church on 31 College Ave.

EDIT 12/2: Followup article posted on Wicked Local, linked here: Davis Square one step closer to medical marijuana dispensaries

The chiropractor tag on this community hasn't been used in ages! Do you have a great chiropractor to recommend in the area, who is taking new patients? Preferably one who takes Blue Cross, if at all possible. Thanks.

A sign on the door says

Somerville Express Center is closing August 25.

Our Boston Center is located at 1055 Commonwealth Avenue and is accessible via the MBTA.

To make an appointment, call 1.800.230.PLAN or visit PPLM.org

Here's a statement from Dr. Jennifer Childs-Roshak, the organization's president and CEO, dated June 30.

The office opened on February 22, 2006.

We have started the process of looking for housing for an elderly relative with disabilities. Having already spoken with Somerville Cambridge Elder Services, we have the overview of what is available.

I was wondering if anyone here has any advice based on their experiences. Any place to avoid? Any recommendations? Any handy hints or suggestions? Nearby facilities outside of Somerville?

Thanks,
Cranky

According to a sign in the store window, a mental health and substance use clinic called ColumnHealth will soon open at (I think) 401 Highland Avenue. This used to be Rockland Trust's (nee Central Bank's) loan office.

Hello!
My partner and I are moving to Davis square soon, and are looking for PCPs accepting new patients now. We are both foreign and a bit inexperienced (specially me!)

Any recommendations/advice is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Alas, Dr. Hobbs of Harvard Vanguard/Davis is retiring in June. After working my way through a few other PCPs that did not meet my needs (I'm being polite), I found Dr. Hobbs and have had a great partnership with her for a number of years. Can anyone recommend a PCP at HV/Davis that is competent, kind, listens, is not condescending, etc.?

Hey Davis Squarians! I am asking this for a friend (but also for myself, because it's useful information that I didn't see in the archives).

Where do you go around here for free/cheap STI testing? Fast turn-around is a definite plus, as is thoroughness of testing. Friend has MassHealth, if there's anywhere that definitely takes that for cheap screenings.

Thanks!

I'm disabled and can't shovel, so every storm is an issue for me. My landlord shovels the walkway, but I could use help shoveling my car after this week's (or any) blizzard. I have neighbors and friends who have been very helpful in the past, but several of them have moved farther away or need to be home with their kids, so I'm running out of people to impose upon. If you're looking to do a good deed and get a little exercise, please let me know!

If you can't help this week but might be able to after another storm (because this is Boston, so today's won't be our last of the winter!) please let me know.

I'm on Day St and yes, I'll provide a shovel. If you don't want to leave a comment here, you can email me at livinglifehappier at gmail dot com

Hi everyone!  My dental office is hosting a vaccination clinic in January for adults in Somerville and all surrounding communities.  It will be on Wednesday, January 7, 2015, from 8am to 7pm.  Registration is now open, and most immunizations are free with health insurance!  We're working with Rite Aid to offer 11 different vaccinations and boosters, including flu, Gardasil, Hep A and B, meningitis, TDAP, and others!  Most adults are not current with the immunizations available, and it's one of the best things you can do for your health.

Walk-ins are welcome, but registration is strongly encouraged so that we can have enough supplies and know when to expect you!

English registration

Registro Espanol

Registro de Portugues

There is also a public Facebook event, so feel free to invite your friends directly from the event page to help spread the word!!  If you'd like some flyers to hang in your community, email info@vaccinatesomerville.com and let me know if you'd like English, Spanish, Portuguese, or all three!

Thanks, and hope to see you on Wednesday, January 7, 2015!

Best,
Dr. Rosie Wagner

This list really could use some updating:

I am now the temporary owner of a diabetic cat, while his real owner is on an extended hospital stay.

I've gotten the insulin injections sorted out, but along with that comes the task of disposing of the sharps -- the needles used for the injections and the sharps used to testing blood sugar -- properly.

Are there any handy collection points local in Somerville?

'Tis that time of year--where the community members protect themselves from flu, and protect the most vulnerable members of our community, by keeping the flu away as much as possible.

Flu is not trivial to kids with leukemia, or seniors in fragile health. Or many other folks in challenging medical situations. My nephew battled leukemia for several years, and relied on the herd to keep infectious disease away from him during that rough time. He's in remission and back to full vax status, but for years I worried. I still worry for the other kids like him, though.

So get to your doctor, your pharmacy, or try these free clinics from the city. Free Flu Vaccine Schedule links to the city web site. Will post the full text here below the cut.
