Can anyone recommend sources of information or legal aid relating to signing up for MassHealth / Medicaid? Seeking someone with knowledge on the current system/requirements, to help a person with zero income but some assets renew their enrollment in the least-damaging way.
Pointers toward nonprofits that answer this kind of question, or anything similar, would be appreciated.

Does anyone have recommendations on a tax lawyer in the area?

I could use some help figuring out my responsibilities related to my child care expenses.

For many years I've used a tax place located right in Davis Square. This year, they moved elsewhere, off the T, so I'm looking for a replacement. Somewhere in Davis Square, or right by another red line stop on this side of the river, hopefully. Do any of you have someone to suggest, who you've used for a few years and know is good, available weekends and evenings during tax season, and works relatively promptly?

Correction: the fee is 3.20% of the car's value excise tax with a $3. minimum.

Guess I've never paid my Somerville excise tax on-line.
Went through the steps to do that just now and discovered right near the end (through an alert - thank you!) that the fee is $3 3.20% of the car's value excise tax, with a $3 minimum. That seems kind of high – has it been that for a while? The city does it through an enity name Kelly & Ryan Associates

I pay all my monthlies on-line and only RCN charges a fee – that's a $1 and I'm lazy but $3 seemed a bit much, so it was back to my "forever" stamps. .  .

So!  My spouse and I have finally decided that lack of a local bank account is bad, and we're looking to open accounts with a credit union locally.

We require the ability to have separate checking accounts and to be able to transfer funds between them.  (So I can transfer money to/from his checking account and vice versa)  We had this at our old CU back in Illinois, but apparently it's a completely foreign concept out here, because when we went to CPCU, they cheerfully told us 'Of course you can do that!' until we opened the accounts, and then the bank officer gave us a deer in the headlights look and said 'No that's not possible.'

I surfed through the tags for banking, and as this is a pretty specific question, didn't find anything.  Does anyone out there have a similar setup to what we want?  (I'd be really surprised of other couples don't)  Do you love your CU?

We live in Magoun Square and work in Cambridge and Charlestown respectively, but if there's a CU that meets our requirements, we're willing to travel for a branch/ATM.

Thanks!

I'm looking for an accountant. I've got one I've been using but a couple of things make me think that he's not the best fit for me. Ideally I'd want someone who has a decent knowledge of the taxes around selling a home & buying a new one, and someone who would be willing to meet with me and talk to me about this issue now-ish would be best of all.

As home owner who lives in the home I own, I get an exemption saving me about 20% on my property tax. I just got a letter from the Board of Assessors saying that "the Board is requiring those taxpayers who have been receiving the exemption for the longest peiord of time to refile an application for fiscal year 2014.

I started filling out the form, and then my spidey sense started tingling. Although there are no obvious errors or misstatements, there's a level of enthusiasm that I associate more with scams than the city of Somerville. There's an exclamation point at the end of the sentence that says how much I saved in property tax in 2013, and there's a bolded, underlined DO NOT IGNORE!! at the top of the page. There's also a vague sense of threat, in sentences like "Failure to return you application and documention wihtin 30 days of the date of this letter will require the board to remove the exemption for FY2014. You are strongly advised to file now and not delay, (we will send no additional letter)." Most worryingly, they ask for a copy of my 2013 MA tax return.

Has anyone else received something like this? I plan to call 311 on Monday for more information, but figured it might be worthwhile to post here, as it's likely other community members will be receiving similar letters.

EDIT: Thanks to everyone who chimed in. It sounds like it's legit. I'm still planning to call Tuesday (thanks Ron for the reminder that Monday is a holiday), both to confirm and also to suggest to them that they may want to tone down the urgency to avoid sounding like a phishing expedition.

My insurance provider (BCBSIL) lists almost a hundred clinical social workers within a mile of my house (Teele Sq), and over a thousand in the greater Boston area, so I'm hoping someone can help me narrow the list down.

I've got a UK investment that doesn't really line up with anything in US tax code, and so I need some professional advice on figuring out how it ought to be declared. Any recommendations in the local area?

Can anyone recommend a good (and reasonably affordable) accountant in Somerville?

I need some advice in a big way -- I'm dealing with my late brother's finances and have tax questions out the wazoo. Anyone have any recommendations in or around this area? Thanks!

Have anyone successfully negotiate a lump sum settlement to avoid 18.5 or 30% collection fees for student Perkins/Stafford loans that have gone into default? I am amazed for not paying for one year that the interest rate has gone through the roof, payments cannot be income-based until out of rehab, and there are these incredible collection costs on the full principal.  Working two jobs but don't want to do this for 10 years+! Any tips?

I just got a rather shocking update from my mortgage company regarding the real estate tax for my house in Somerville. The mortgage company pays the taxes out of escrow for me and it seems that in the past year those taxes have tripled, literally. Was there a housing tax this past year that I missed?

Update: Think it is the residential exemption...thanks for the heads up. Will call to get it worked out on Monday. Thanks for the help!

So I'm currently in a situation where I might be able to make the finances fall-in place and go to school at Landmark College in VT this Fall. Since they specialize in students with learning disablities, their web site says you can sometimes get a medical deduction as a special education expense and to consult your tax advisor.

I don't have a tax advisor.

So since I have no freaking clue as to how to even start the search process, I'm asking all you snarkers at home for advice. If you have specific advisors for me to check-out, you need to know I don't drive. If someone's particularly kick-ass, I will take the extra time to commuter rail and Regional Transit Authority out to someone.

Especially since the advisor's advice might help me avoid this from being a true statement: College: the fling that lasts 2, 4, 5 years, but costs you a lifetime.

Eastern Bank will be eliminating the Wainwright free checking plan on 4/2/2012. The primary options for regular folks are:
* "Free" checking: No monthly fee, you pay for a book of checks. ATM fees are zero for Eastern Bank ATMs, $2 for SUM ATMs, and (Edited for clarity) for non-SUM ATMs, it's $2 plus the host bank's fee.
* "EZ" checking: No monthly fee if you use your debit card to purchase stuff at least 15 times per month, OR maintain an average balance of $1,500. $10 per month if you don't meet the other requirements.

I think those requirements are obnoxious. Anyone care to make independent bank suggestions?

Does anyone own a business in Somerville and do you pay personal property tax?  What is the rate?  This guide doesn't seem to have the rate info.  Any general comments on your experience?

does anyone here know how to get in touch with Diane O'Brien, the EA who does taxes in Davis Square? I've tried the phone and e-mail contact info on her webpage (dianeobrienea.com) but have had no luck getting a response from her. She did my taxes for a few years and I need some follow-up documentation from her by Thursday, but she's non-responsive, which is really frustrating. Please let me know if you know another way to contact her. Thanks so much.

Hi All,

I am looking for recommendations for financial planning services. Help with investment management, retirement planning, taxes, etc. An independent might be preferred but in the end knowledge and effectiveness are most important. I don't really like dealing with this stuff so someone who is good at educating would be a plus.

Thanks.

Hi there-

I have a friend whose father, back in Africa, needs surgery. This friend is pretty reliable, but I don't know him so well that I'm willing to just give him all the money up front. On the other hand, I have met his father (and family) and do want to do what I can do help him, medically.

Do any of you know of any sites where we can set up a microloan, so that I can see other folks who are helping him out with this, and we can all sort of hold him accountable for paying us back, collectively?

Thanks.

I'm considering asking H&R Block to help me address some medium-size tax questions and concerns, but I thought I'd post here first and see if anyone can recommend someone local that they've worked with and had a good experience with.

Thanks in advance for any leads!
