Can anyone recommend sources of information or legal aid relating to signing up for MassHealth / Medicaid? Seeking someone with knowledge on the current system/requirements, to help a person with zero income but some assets renew their enrollment in the least-damaging way.
Pointers toward nonprofits that answer this kind of question, or anything similar, would be appreciated.

Hello DSLJ,

The hubby and I have been using zipcar for 8 years now, with much success, but we're finding we fairly regularly also rent from enterprise for the weekends (usually when they do their $10/day sales during the winter). Adding their insurance coverage often more than doubles the cost of the rental. We rent under our credit card that offers some rental coverage, but have been wondering if we should explore getting something like non owner car insurance. I've read that it exists, but the brief search we have done has turned up no leads in MA. We called our homeowners insurance company (Amica) and they don't offer it. I can definitely call around to companies that insure in MA (and eventually will), but I'm wondering if anyone in Davis actually has it or had it, and can recommend a company that will offer it?

Thanks!

I'm looking for an insurance agent.   Any recomendations?    I'm especially interested in recomendations from people who in addition to howeowner's/renter's/auto, have a business, rental property etc.

I've found that insurance agents (based on my sample size of 2) are helpful the first year, and then stop shopping my policies around for the best deal, stop being as responsive to emails, etc.   I don't know if their commission incentives are at odds with me getting the lowest premiums or if it is lack of effort.

I've been unemployed long enough that my COBRA is running out, so I'm looking into getting health insurance through the Mass. Health Connector. I'm finding it really awkward to deal with. I haven't even found the place where I can enter my demographics and see the (unsubsidized) prices I get for the various plans. And I haven't been able to find any useful advice online. Does anyone have any info on how to best deal with the Connector?

tl;dr: If you have MassHealth, you may have been assigned to the CeltiCare plan without knowing it. Many people think this is a bad thing. You have until this Friday, Jan 31, to call MassHealth and change it. Otherwise, you're stuck with it until the next open enrollment period, no idea when that will be.

More info:

Today, my clinic learned that MassHealth had notified all members that plain-old MassHealth is going away, there is a new thing called MassHealth Careplus they were now in, in which they had to choose plans, and if members didn't choose plans by a certain date (Jan 1?), they were defaulted to CeltiCare. Expect apparently a lot of people didn't get the notification? Or didn't understand they had to do something? Or didn't realize the consequences?

People are apparently discovering this only after they try to use their insurance. CeltiCare has a very small number of providers, all(?) clustered in Boston, and I gather very demanding prescription pre-auth requirements. My clinic doesn't take it at all, and now all our patients who were defaulted to CeltiCare need to fix this in the next 48hrs or they lose access to their doctors and therapists.

Because the current open enrollment period ends 1/31. After that, you're stuck with whatever plan you're in until the next open enrollment period. No idea when that is.

If you are a MassHealth member, and didn't realize you had to pick a plan, you may have been assigned one -- possibly one that really doesn't work for you.

If you are a MassHealth member, to find out what plan MassHealth has you in, call the main number, the one on the back of your MassHealth card: 800-841-2900. They're open 8am to 5pm, M-F. They will change your plan if you ask them to by Friday.

You may want to call your doctors, pharmacies, therapist, etc and ask which MassHealth plans they take, if you are affected by this change over. Apparently a lot of clinics which previously could be characterized as "take MassHealth" as of the end of the month no longer do -- they take specific plans within MassHealth. This is part of the confusion; members don't realize they have to make sure their providers, whom they've been seeing for years on MassHealth, will take their new MassHealth Careplus plan.

Please also be aware, just because you used your MassHealth coverage to get medical care this month doesn't mean that everything is fine: during this month, because of open enrollment transition, all previous MassHealth providers were (I am told) allowed to bill all plans, regardless of their contractual agreements. That goes away 2/1/2014, and providers can only bill to the plans they're signed up to take. So my clinic has been able to see CeltiCare patients all this month, because they come up on our computer as "sure, the insurance will pay." We didn't realize there was a problem until now.

Anyone have any experience with pet insurance providers? Or can anyone make an informed recommendation? My vet has pointed me toward VPI and Embrace, but it's hard to find good reviews of these (or anyone else) online.

Thank you!

Does anyone have a good renter's insurance recommendation?

I'd like to hear from people who've had to apply for MassHealth for nursing-home services for elderly relatives -- especially if your relative was coming to MA from out-of-state. What was your experience like? How much did you end up paying out-of-pocket? What organizations did you contact (and how helpful were they)?

Are there any local groups such as small business associations, etc, that pool together to purchase health insurance? mahealthconnector.org quoted me in the high 200s for a high deductible policy. That's acceptable to me (and doesn't seem as inordinately high as people talk about), especially since I never get sick and rarely go to the doctor, but I'd like to see if I can get either a smaller deductible or a lower premium or both. My alumni association doesn't do group health insurance in Mass.

What do people who run small businesses in Somerville do? (I'm not going to get married to save $100 :-) )

After ten years in my house I'm finally getting around to looking at the insurance we originally got at the suggestions of the mortgagor. Looking at tags, I see that several folks are happy with Arbella, which sounds fine, but can anyone recommend a good insurance broker or agent? In or near Davis, or near my work, which is near the Watertown malls, is preferred.

Hi All, I'm considering moving to a new apartment soon that, while still in striking distance of Davis, is technically a Cambridge address. Just wondering if anyone had done this and if there were any kind of tax or financial implications I ought to be aware of. I feel like the answer would be "not really" besides slight adjustments to car-related things such as excise, insurance, permits etc.

Hey guys, I checked and couldn't find anything recent in the 'insurance' and 'eye care' tags, so I decided to just post.

I desperately need an eye exam and new glasses, and I'd like to know if any place close to Davis (T or bus-accessible) takes Masshealth? Their site and robot voice on the 800-number was useless.

Thanks all in advance!

Now that car insurance has changed in MA, has anyone done shopping around to see who offers the lowest rates for a car in Somerville?

I looked in the Insurance archive and anything about this was prior to the changeover.

I'm with liberty mutual right now, but want to save more money - if anyone has already done a lot of shopping around I'd love to hear about it.

Hello hello...

We just moved into the area from NY and are looking to get both car insurance (though we'd rather keep our cheaper NY insurance... boo MA prices!) and renter's insurance. I looked back through older entries that were tagged with insurance but there wasn't anything all too recent so I thought I'd come asking for any advice anyone might have--especially with the change in recent laws for car insurance.

We are both 23 and unfortunately have both had a couple tickets on our driver's histories so we don't have perfectly clean driving records (though I'm almost to 3 years with no new points on my license). We will both be using the T to get to work/school so are hoping to get some low mileage/public transportation use discounts.

We'll probably try to shop around a bit but so far have been looking at Amica, Arabella (someone recommended Wedgwood-Crane & Connolly on another site?), and perhaps Plymouth Rock (as I know they have public transit & low mileage discounts).

Thoughts/advice/opinions? Anything that might be of help on both companies and specific agents would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I'm about to buy a house, and I need insurance. I've got a quote from Arbella, a local company, that is much better than my other quotes. Has anyone worked with them? Any brickbats or bouquets?

hello, davis square.  I just moved here and need to get on this whole process of getting a resident's parking permit.  just wanted to take an informal poll of those of you with cars--what auto insurance carrier do you use, and are you happy with them?  oh, quirky Massachusetts.

I would be most grateful for the info.

thx

Good Morning Everyone,

I am in the market for a dentist in Davis Square. I have noticed there are so many dentist offices in and around Davis Square I cannot possibly choose. Anyone have any recommendations?

Also, something I have been meaning to do for a while (but feel myself suddenly pushed given the rash of break-ins in the area) is Renters Insurance. Any recommendations on that front?

Thanks,

Are there any local insurance agencies that can help me out with some renter's insurance? Any recommendations? Thanks!
[identity profile] flashman78.livejournal.com
Does anyone know of a company that would be able to handle renter's insurance for a household of four people... we're finding that most of them only do three at max.

Thanks Davis!

Hello again DSers
Sorry to post so much in one day, but I figured that other DS people know this best:
For anyone out there that has independent heatlth insurance/pay out of pocket health insurance, can you point me in the right direction? I have one lead that I am meeting tomorrow at the Dunkin Dougnuts in DS, but I thought other people might have more ideas.

Any help is welcome. Thanks!
