A close college friend for whom money is tight has a somewhat precipitous move, and is willing to drive wherever in the Boston area to pick up boxes. [livejournal.com profile] ron_newman thought it would be okay to post since I know a bunch of folks in Davis-ish and she would be willing to drive to Davis to fetch.

To quote:
"I am moving from Brookline to Belmont, and am in need of boxes. If you have suitable boxes, I can pick them up from you almost anywhere in greater Boston. I have a car.

Any size moving-compatible boxes are welcome. I have some liquor store boxes already, and intend to continue acquiring those, but if you have that size and/or larger, and/or clean packing materials, I would be grateful.

I have begun the packing process, and am unsure of exactly how long this will take, but probably will complete the move over the course of the next week or two."
Probably easiest to email me on vvalkyri on gmail and I'll get folks in touch.

Thanks!

I recently moved from Davis to Porter and now have an entire 2-bdrm moving kit worth of cardboard boxes, wrapping paper, and packing tape dispensers left over. I would like to pass them to someone can reuse them rather than put them out for recycling. Let me know if you want them or if you know who would!

Anyone have moving company recommendations? We're moving a 1BR apartment's worth of stuff.

edit 9/21/2016: we went with gentle giant and it was amazing. They showed up on time, they were enthusiastic, the amount of time was under the initial estimate. There was a gps glitch that increased their drive time, and they told me about it and took the cost off the bill. Moving sucks but this was seriously the most painless move I've ever done.

Hi all,

It's been clear for a while that I can't afford Somerville anymore, but I'm at a loss as to where to move next.

I've lived in Camberville for eight years, having moved here directly after college. I absolutely love this area--I love that I don't need a car, I love all our festivals, I love the concentration of artists/creatives and scientists/techies, and I love that Somerville is an actual community, not just a city. As a single, childless freelancer, I need those things to avoid going all Jack Torrence.

Does anyone have any suggestions for cities (local, national, international) that would suit someone who loves Somerville but can't swing $1500/mo for a one-bedroom, $18 for a sandwich/latte at a cafe, etc.?

I'm joining the many who are switching addresses this week, and this piece has to go. Very solid (it's heavy), 2 drawers & 2 cabinets still in perfect working order with all original hardware. Measures 60x20x37.

I hate to give it up - has tons of storage space, but it wont fit in the teeny new apt. If you can take it before Saturday, let's talk. (I honestly have no idea what it's worth.) I'm in Ball Sq.

Someone decided that my apartment is in violation of building codes, and I need to move ASAP.

I am not looking for a housemate situation.

My max budget is $1100/mo.

I have a cat.

I need to have MBTA access. Subway preferred, buses OK, commuter rail if absolutely nothing else works out, but I don't drive.

I am quiet, steadily employed, don't smoke or do drugs, and can provide a great reference from my landlord.

So - any ideas? Please feel free to pass this along to anyone you think might know of a suitable place.

Posts of "haw haw haw, what are you smoking, you can't get a place anywhere near Davis for under $2K" are expected, and will be ignored. I've lived here long enough to know that an ethical landlord with an odd space - basement, attic, mother-in-law with shared entrance - will often be reluctant to post it at an affordable price for fear of attracting losers, so I'm here to say, "Here's your Winner, long-term and reliable!" My current landlord will attest to same. And, as explained above, it doesn't have to be in Davis (although staying in Somerville would be delightful!) I'm just getting the word out however I can.

Many thanks!

I'm looking for a company (insured, professional) that can disassemble an armoir and reassemble it upstairs in my house. Any suggestions?

Hello, everyone!  After cooling our heels in Ohio for a year, we're trying to get back to Boston!  We're a working artist and writer, making speculative fiction and educational mental health comics.  We're trans and also multiple; if you'd like to learn more about that, here's our info page.  We are disabled, which means that we're pretty quiet and tire easily, but we always pay rent and bills on time, and we're good about cleaning.  References available on request.

We're hunting for April 1st, but the date is malleable.

Rent: Due to disability, no more than $500

Hoping to find these things homes before a Dec 15 move.

Curb Alert: Free furniture (Dressers, Tables). Tomorrow is trash day, so come quick.

Everything is on the sidewalk at Porter Street and Highland Ave in Somerville, in front of the small stores nearby.

This is what I'll consider "well outside" of Davis proper, but I figure enough folks in the vicinity of Tufts read this community and also might be packing to move that it makes sense to post here.

Free Moving Boxes, in good, clean, dry condition, broken down, in a stack, at the corner of Chester Ave and Winthrop St. in the church parking lot.

I will have to move them if they aren't taken, but that seems like a good place for now.

Glenwood Rd, lower half off of Vernon in the Magoun Sq area. Everything will be out as of 5pm tonight (8/12) or so. Items will include:
List... )

We're relocating to Rhode Island next week, so it's gotta go! Enjoy, my lovely locals, you shall all be missed.

It's that magic time of year.  Has anyone got any moving boxes they are trying to get rid of?
[identity profile] surrealestate.livejournal.com
Has anyone ever used one of those pod-type moving things for a local move? We are moving soon and it feels like it'd be easier to be able to pack incrementally into those, but I don't know if it's worth the added cost. I'm hoping somebody else has done a thorough comparison of the various pod companies already. :) This would be just to move locally, not to store in between.

I'm currently looking for a one bedroom apartment in the Somerville/Medford area, and my price range is on the very low end ($1400 or under) so I am aware my options are limited. One problem I'm running into is that most of the apartments in my price range are listed through brokers as "no pets allowed", and I have two guinea pigs. I've never run into problems negotiating this with landlords in other cities, regardless of what the lease originally said. I've offered to get pet-specific references from my past landlords and pay a pet deposit, but the broker I've been corresponding with has just flat out not acknowledged my proposals and has limited me to the one (very undesirable) pet friendly apartment available. I'm not sure how to address this going forward, as I've only ever rented directly from the owner.

Do any of you have experience or advice for renting while having small pets? What strategies have worked or not worked? How should I approach brokers? Should I try to downplay it until I'm closer to signing the lease?* Am I really, truly limited to apartments that say "pet friendly"? It seems hard to believe that every single landlord would categorize caged pets in exactly the same manner as a dog or cat, but maybe I've just gotten used to the much less competitive housing market in Vermont.

*Please don't suggest lying and signing a lease without telling the landlord! Among many other reasons, it opens up the possibility of being forced to surrender my pets if found out, and it's unlikely I'd be able to find them a better home. Giving up pets for non-emergency reasons is kind of a hot topic for me, so let's avoid it.

I have a local move coming up and am thinking of using a full service mover or packing service. There is nothing I dread more than packing and unpacking a kitchen, never mind the rest of my stuff (2 bed, 2 bath).

There are a lot of great moving recommendations on here, but I haven't seen anything about packing. Has anyone had success without paying an arm and a leg?

I wonder if it makes sense to leverage a full service mover or have someone pack separately from task rabbit or something similar. All ideas and recommendations are very appreciated!

I have 15-20 medium sized moving boxes up for grabs. Most of them are from Uhaul/Home Depot. They are currently all loaded in the back of my car, so I can drop them off if you are close to Davis.
[identity profile] somerfriend.livejournal.com
We've finished our move, if you have not, we have free moving boxes and packing materials.  Might even be able to deliver them if you don't have transportation.   We are near Davis.
