Hi all,

It's been clear for a while that I can't afford Somerville anymore, but I'm at a loss as to where to move next.

I've lived in Camberville for eight years, having moved here directly after college. I absolutely love this area--I love that I don't need a car, I love all our festivals, I love the concentration of artists/creatives and scientists/techies, and I love that Somerville is an actual community, not just a city. As a single, childless freelancer, I need those things to avoid going all Jack Torrence.

Does anyone have any suggestions for cities (local, national, international) that would suit someone who loves Somerville but can't swing $1500/mo for a one-bedroom, $18 for a sandwich/latte at a cafe, etc.?

As we often do before important elections, Davis Square LiveJournal presents a poll.
Which Presidential candidate do you prefer in the upcoming March 1 primary?

Remember that the registration deadline for the primary is this Wednesday, February 10.

(Note: Like our previous polls in DSLJ, this is not a secret ballot; individual votes are readable by all members of the community)

Feel free to post any comments that are relevant to the candidates or the primary election.

[Poll #2036232]

The general election for Governor of Massachusetts, as well as for other statewide and district offices and ballot questions, is four weeks from today: Tuesday, November 4.

The candidate favored by a large plurality in our previous DSLJ poll did not win his party primary, so let's see where we stand today.

(Note: like our previous polls in DSLJ, this is not a secret ballot; individual votes are readable by all members of the community)

[Poll #1984605]

All discussion about the upcoming election (for Governor or any other office) is welcome in the comments here.

The primary election for Governor of Massachusetts, as well as other statewide and district offices, is just a week away: next Tuesday, September 9.

In our last poll, taken in mid-July, over 30% of us were still undecided. If that's still true today, the candidates have a lot of work left to do and not much time left to do it in. Let's see how much DSLJ's opinions have changed in the past seven weeks.

(Note: like our previous polls in DSLJ, this is not a secret ballot; individual votes are readable by all members of the community)

[Poll #1980755]

I have not listed independent candidates here because they will not be on the September 9 primary ballot. But if you support one, tell us in the comments.

All discussion about the state election (for Governor or any other office) is welcome here. This Reddit post contains links to the campaign websites of all opposed candidates for all statewide offices on the September ballot. As today's Globe article shows. many of us can't even name the candidates for offices lower than Governor.

The primary election for Governor of Massachusetts, as well as other statewide and district offices, is only eight weeks away: Tuesday, September 9.

If the election were held today, for whom would you vote?

[Poll #1975440]

I have not listed independent candidates here because they will not be on the September 9 primary ballot, and we don't know who they all are yet (the filing deadline is July 29). But if you support one, tell us in the comments.

All discussion about the state election (for Governor or any other office) is welcome here. I'll probably post a second poll when we get closer to the primary and more folks are paying attention.

There are two print media polls about the new bike corrals in Somerville.

Please take part in them!

A few screens down on the right hand side of
http://www.thesomervillenews.com/

Today's Poll

Are you in favor of the new bike corrals being installed in meter spots in busy business areas?

O Yes
O No

On the right side of
http://www.somervillescout.com/

Question of the Week

What's your opinion of bike corrals?
O I use them and love them. The City should keep making life easier for bicyclists.
O Not a biker, but cars should be used to sharing the road.
O Not a fan. We need more car parking spaces, not fewer.
O Not sure.

Thanks!

I was wasting time browsing the SN site and saw this poll (Today's Poll):

Should the word “Christmas” be taken out of all things pertaining to “Christmas” and replaced with the word “Holiday”?

Given that there are many kinds of holidays around the same time, and that there are people from many religions (including atheists) in Somerville, isn't it obvious that referring to this period as "Christmas" would exclude many people? What am I missing? Glad that "YES" is winning, but not by much.

Okay, so I actually declared it officially gone for the sake of the poll on Monday, then forgot to post. With the streets clean, it was getting hard to justify the idea that it still there in any meaningful way. I know there are still remnants of big piles (and even a teeny amount in my yard due to it getting shoveled into an apparently remarkably shaded spot), but let's face it, we are (at least for now) free of the evil frozen white stuff. Yay!

Plus it was Pi Day.

Which makes the sole winner [livejournal.com profile] kelkyag. All glory to them!

Of the 55 total guesses, there were only four earlier dates (one in Feb and three in Mar). The remaining fifty followed, with 13 more in March, 21 in April, 14 in May, and one each in June and July. If we end up with more snow that doesn't melt right away, there may be another winner.

Both the (rounded) mean and median averages were April 15, and the two most popular answers with four guesses each were April 15 and May 15. So the lesson here is do your taxes. Also we are apparently a very pessimistic bunch. (June and July? Come on!)

Arguments may now commence over my poor judgement in determining the results.

ETA: Here are all the guesses in date order and formatted for easy processing:

There has been discussion in my home as I'm sure in many of yours over how long it will take this year for all the snow to finally melt away. I've heard guesses for as early as April and as late as June, but might it be even later? Or earlier? Here is the official DSLJ contest! I will judge (and am therefore ineligible) based on when all the snow is gone from my yard, or some similar arbitrary yet definite metric, and announce the winner(s) in however many months.

You have until ~5pm Friday to place your bets. You can change your answer as many times as you like until the poll is closed.

Over in [livejournal.com profile] davis_meta, someone posted a question earlier this week:
Is there any consensus on DSLJ posts promoting group buying deals for local businesses? I kinda figure that if someone is interested in that silliness they'll subscribe to notifications from the coupon sites themselves. What say you?
A number of other frequent posters agree, as you'll see in the comments there.

However, we moderators are reluctant to impose a new rule on the community unless a strong majority appears to support it. This subject was discussed here once before last September, with no clear consensus emerging then. One of this week's [livejournal.com profile] davis_meta commenters suggested a poll, so here it is:

[Poll #1665624]

([livejournal.com profile] davis_deals is not hypothetical, by the way. We created it specifically for this purpose after last September's discussion. However, nobody has yet posted anything to it.)

In the tradition of pre-election polls here on [livejournal.com profile] davis_square, here's one for the Governor's race.

[Poll #1512191]

Given the recent hysteria about the upcoming election ( http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2010/01/coakley_underes.html ), do you think Brown will win?

The televised debates are over. All that's left is for us to vote next Tuesday. Let's see if anything has changed since last month's DSLJ poll.

[Poll #1511363]

The mysterious bowling alley in Ball Square is a mystery no longer! I slipped a note in an envelope through the mail slot at the alley, and the owner called me back the next day. His name is Butch and he was very nice, and he rents out the alley now and then for private functions. He's happy to rent to us! It's 8 lanes of candle pin, BYOB/food. So let's have a [livejournal.com profile] davis_square bowling party in January or February!

Bowling leagues have the place permanently booked every weeknight, but the alley is available for private party rental on Saturday nights. I know we don't usually do DS_LJ meetups on Saturdays, but I think this is worthy of an exception. :-) $9 a head includes shoe rental and three hours of bowling, 7PM to 10PM. They don't sell food or beverages but we can bring our own, including alcohol. Organizational details to follow. But first, we have to find a date!

Note that this poll is not an RSVP poll, just a date survey. We've eliminated the 1st week in Jan (too soon after the holidays), the 3rd week in Jan (Arisia weekend), and Valentines weekend (lots of people will be busy). I can't guarantee the alley will be available on the #1 favorite date, but lets see when the most folks could make it. Wanna bowl in Ball Square? Check off all the Saturday nights you could do it. We need a minimum of 20 people to make this happen!

Three weeks ago, I posted a poll that resulted in a dead heat -- 32 votes each for Capuano, Coakley, and Undecided. Since then, we've had several televised debates and lots more news coverage, so let's see if the Undecided voters have settled on a choice by now. This LJ poll will remain open until the real poll closes next Tuesday at 8 pm.

As before, please feel free to leave comments telling us why you support your candidate (or oppose another candidate).
