It looks like Skyline dry cleaners has closed; there’s a for rent sign and all the equipment is gone.

Unfortunately, I haven’t heard from them and they still have some of my shirts. The voice mailbox is full, and the social media has been dormant for several years.

Anyone have a contact number or email?

The MBTA will begin demolishing the Ball Square Bowling alley tomorrow, according to the "Construction Update" email that the City of Somerville sent me last week.

  • Starting Monday, April 22, crews will begin demolishing four buildings on Boston Ave. near the Broadway intersection, where the new Ball Square T station will be. Demo and debris removal will continue throughout the week between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., requiring lane shifts around the work zone.

According to the Somerville News Weekly, the alley closed in November, 2017. They also have a photo of the BOWLING sign being removed last month. (I do not really recommend The Somerville News Weekly, but I cannot find any other source for these two news items.)

Long-time readers of this group and its LiveJournal predecessor may recall a big party that we held there in February 2010, organized by [personal profile] plumtreeblossom. Here is a Flickr album from that night, including some backstage photos of the pin-setting machinery.

Hi all! I have a bunch of baby pea plants (~8" high) in need of a trellis. I know it's late in the season, but I just thought I'd put it out there!

According to the Tufts Daily, the owners of Dave's are going to open a restaurant and bar called Semolina Kitchen and Bar in late spring on the edge of the Tufts campus, near the Collaborative Innovation and Learning Complex at 574 Boston Ave. This the is big renovation Tufts did to the warehouse-like space across from St. Clement's.

“We’re going to be open in the morning for coffee, pastries … and a more continental-type breakfast, and then [we’ll] go into lunch and then into dinner,” Theophanis said.

The new restaurant will be a causal place for food and drink, Theophanis said. In addition, there will be take-out service and a pizza oven.

Seems like an odd place for anything other than a weekday lunch place for students & faculty. There's not much after hours traffic down there.

https://tuftsdaily.com/news/2017/03/10/owners-of-daves-fresh-pasta-to-open-new-restaurant-near-574-boston-ave/

Doing a little research, it looks like this is the space, which I just assumed was Tufts property:

I guess it's been in the works for a while:

Howdy! Doing a bit of spring cleaning, and we have a few things that are looking for good homes.

The big item is a corner desk. It was originally from Ikea, I believe (it predates me in this house), and is still in perfectly good shape -- I've simply replaced it with a standing desk, which is more to my preference. It is now fully disassembled down in our basement, but you can find pictures of it in this album. I took the photos as I was taking it apart, to help understand how to put it back together.

It's mostly a lot of small-to-medium-sized pieces. The only tricky bit is the main desktop, which is about four feet square -- it can probably fit in a standard car, but it's not small, and probably wants two people to carry it safely.

It includes an aftermarket keyboard tray that I added, and goes to the first person who comes and gets it. It's a good desk, with lots of useful space in a small footprint, ideal for office or student use.

I've also got a bunch of comics longboxes -- the three-foot ones that hold a couple hundred comics each. I'm gradually whittling down my massive comics collection, and have about ten longboxes now sitting empty. They're used, but still intact. First come, first serve -- while I'm happy to give them all to one person, I expect folks are more likely to want just a couple of them.

Finally, we've got a pile of spice jars, mostly from Penseys. We'll recycle them if need be, but if somebody has a use for them, please drop me a note.

We're on Murdock Street, just off Cedar St. at the Ball Square end. (Near the end of the Community Path.) If you're interested in any of the above, you can contact me by messaging me here, or email me at jducoeur at gmail. Thanks!

Sabertooth Vegan Bakery in Ball Square posted this morning on instagram and facebook that they were going on a "permanent vacation". The end date isn't firm but likely in the next two weeks. The facebook post is here: https://www.facebook.com/sabertoothbakery?_rdr=p None of the posts mention Taco Party closing, so I am assuming they will stay in the space.

(Yeah, I didn't even know it was gone either!)

I pass by Ball Square often and didn't even notice it being closed or under renovations, until yesterday, when they had some ladders and construction stuff inside, and papers announcing House of Kebab's grand opening today.
A construction worker and a restaurant employee both saw me looking inside, and the restaurant guy handed me a menu and said i should come check it out. (I think they missed the cue that they should have told me reassuring things about being sad that Yak and Yeti was gone.)

The inside looks about the same - I think they have taken down the wall of fabric webbing woven around the lights, but they still have the giant photo-wall of the Anapurna range, and the same chairs and tables.

It is moving from being a Nepali-Indian restaurant with a lunch buffet to being a kebab-focused Indian restaurant with a lunch buffet, an outpost of Kebab Factory over by Dali and the Biscuit on Washington st. The pumpkin tarkari and the momos are still on the menu, but otherwise the Nepali specialties have been replaced by other specials, they will still serve the usual Indian classics like saag and tikka masala, and they have a large menu section of kebabs, and of kebab wrap sandwiches.

I understand that the owners of Kebab Factory already owned Yak and Yeti, so while the effect is that the menu will be different, and probably the kitchen staff as well, the place didn't actually change hands entirely and it's more of a branding decision.

January 1-January 10 they have advertised that everything on the menu is 50% off, but I am not sure if this applies to the buffet pricing.

In case anyone was wondering, the new Taco Party / Sabretooth Bakery storefront in Ball Square is now (as of some time last week, I think) open!

I'm joining the many who are switching addresses this week, and this piece has to go. Very solid (it's heavy), 2 drawers & 2 cabinets still in perfect working order with all original hardware. Measures 60x20x37.

I hate to give it up - has tons of storage space, but it wont fit in the teeny new apt. If you can take it before Saturday, let's talk. (I honestly have no idea what it's worth.) I'm in Ball Sq.

Hi.  My name is David W.S. Lieberman, I am a candidate to be the next Alderman from Somerville Ward 6.

My experience working with students as a City Year AmeriCorps member, prosecuting corruption, fraud, and environmental crimes with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office, and advocating for clients as a private attorney, has helped give me a set of skills that will make me a strong advocate for our community.

I fell in love with Somerville in 2003, when I moved here to attend Tufts University. After we graduated from law school, my wife, Jessica, and I decided to purchase a home on Powder House Terrace and start our lives here because it is a wonderful, growing, vibrant place to live, work and raise a family.

I am excited about Somerville’s future, but I believe it needs strong leadership to ensure that as it grows and develops, it maintains its essential character and remains a place that both its long-time citizens and newer residents can call home.

Some of the issues I am most passionate about include pursuing a housing policy that will help assure our residents
- both owners and renters - that they can afford to raise their families in Somerville for the long term; making local government more responsive to the needs of our residents and businesses; and making sure that all those who do business in and benefit from our City pay their fair share.

If you are interested in learning a bit more about me, you can visit my campaign webite, my facebook page, follow me on twitter, e-mail me at davidwslieberman@gmail.com or call or text me at 617-863-0311.  I posted my full bio from my website below.  I will be out knocking doors and meeting people all summer, so I hope to run across you .  In addition, I've been thinking about doing a meet-up in Davis Square some time this summer to get a chance to meet more people, hear what they think about our community and give them another chance to size me up in person.  Is that something that some of you might be interested in attending?

I have been following DSLJ for some time and I was excited that Ron Newman suggested that I introduce myself here.  I'd love to hear what you all think about the future of Davis Square, Somerville, Johnny D's, 240 Elm Street, etc, and I look forward to answering any questions you have about me

The Broadway bridge over the Lowell Line railroad tracks, just east of Ball Square, will be CLOSED to all traffic (car, bike, and pedestrian) from 6 am this Friday, April 10, to 7pm Saturday, April 11. This closure is part of Green Line Extension construction.

For more information and detour routes, see this page. This is going to put a huge amount of traffic onto tiny side streets on both the Somerville and Medford sides.

Anyone know what the plan is for the #80 and #89 buses? The MassDOT pages don't mention these at all.

Announcement here. "Everything must go."

Bestsellers Cafe in Medford Square also closed, last week.

I know this is technically about Medford, but since it's a block away from Powderhouse Square, I figured it was relevant.  Today I noticed that there's now a "No Right Turn" sign at the corner of Boston Avenue (coming from Ball Square) and Harvard St.  Does anyone know if this is a temporary thing related to the road work they've been doing for a few months, or something permanent?  There's still a "Detour" sign attached to the post, but the turn prohibition sign seemed pretty permanent too.

The development team of Gorka/Laurentzi Brabo and their attorney will be presenting an amended proposal for an 11-unit residential replacement to the Shield Gas Station occupying 620 Broadway. Ward 5 Alderman Mark Niedergang will be facilitating this second gathering to discuss suggestions made to the project at the first meeting which was held on Monday June 2nd at the DAV located at 616 Broadway.

This second meeting will be held inside Pescatore Restaurant, 158 Boston Avenue, on Monday June 30th at 7:00 PM.

The initial proposal, which was never formally filed with the City of Somerville, was presented to the public as a 19-unit residential project with 21 underground parking spots and 2-three bedroom units being designated as affordable. It was during this meeting that concerns including a lack of a commercial space, parking, facade and the construction schedule were brought up by residents. The amended proposal bring the unit amount down to 11 which will certainly have impacts on parking requirements and, possibly, the amount of affordable units. According to the development team, the units will remain as rentals with the market deciding on pricing and whether or not they will be sold as condos.

Anyone know what the helicopter circling Ball Square is about? It's come right above my house several times in the last 15 minutes.

Folks, our "little library" took sort of a beating in the wind storm last month... the door got ripped off so I emptied and removed the shelving. Would welcome some ideas or assistance in building it back. Thinking we might re-purpose a kitchen or bathroom cupboard and insert it into the phone box frame. Any carpenters/engineers/tinkerers out there want to get in on this??? Thx James
