Somerville history - walking tour May 7 of Magoun Square to Armory neighborhood3h ago
Maida Tilchen from Magoun Square

On Saturday, May 7 from 10 am - noon, starting in front of the CVS, there will be a walking tour about the history of the neighborhood that goes from the CVS in Magoun Square (that's the next big intersection on Broadway east of Ball Square), down Lowell Street, Hudson Street, Benton Street, and then turning onto Highland near the Armory and ending up at Lowell Street.

The neighborhood once included a Hostess Cupcakes factory; a Hires Root Beer plant, some houses going back to the 1870s and other surprising history. The land was once a farm owned by an abolitionist.

This will be an informal tour with everyone invited to contribute what they know. It is part of the international Jane's Walk, an event of neighborhood walking tours inspired by Jane Jacobs, the urban renewal activist who saved Greenwich Village from being a big highway.

The walk is sponsored by the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission. It will be video'd and that will be on http://www.somervillema.gov/departments/.... There are already some great videos of past walking tours if you click on Brochures and Self-Guided Tours. May is Historic Preservation Month in Somerville so check that site for other events in May.

Magoun Square is the place to be on Saturday May 21st as local business owners, artists and Gouners join forces for a music and food festival that will follow PorchFest - running from noon to 6:00 p.m citywide.

Extending along Medford Street between Broadway and Lowell, this section of Magoun will be shut down to cars and opened up to families for business tours, face painting and dance lessons courtesy of The Self Expressions Center from 5-7 p.m. Rounding out the evening will be DJ Fadayz spinning tunes and an appearance by Pat & The Hats rocking some jams later in the night before the dance party commences.

Come sample cuisine and sips from local restaurants including Daddy Jones Bar, PennyPackers, Modelo's Market Cafe and Olde Magoun's Saloon.

The event starts at 5:00 p.m. and ends at 10:00 p.m giving attendees plenty of time to make the rounds duringPorchFest and end their day in Magoun for this first-time celebration!

Check out the Facebook invitation and please feel free to share with neighbors, friends, and listservs.

From Mon., June 29 through Thurs. morning, July 2, a production crew will be filming scenes for an upcoming movie in the Magoun Sq. area. For this work, parking restrictions will apply on Broadway between Medford St. and Cedar St., and you may notice large trucks and other vehicles in your neighborhood, though they should not cause any significant delays or other issues for residents in these areas at most times.

Filming will take place primarily inside a private business. However, beginning at approximately 8 p.m. on Wed., July 1, a small portion of Medford St., between Broadway and Lowell St., will be closed to all traffic until approximately 2 a.m. on Thurs. “No Parking” signs will apply beginning at 5 p.m. Detours for vehicles are as follows:

Cars traveling east on Broadway to Medford St. will be detoured onto Hinckley St. to Richardson St.
Cars traveling west on Medford St. will be detoured onto Central St. and Norwood Ave.
Cars on Lowell St. will be detoured at Vernon St. and Richardson St.
Somerville Police personnel will be stationed in these areas to assist with any traffic or safety issues.

If you have questions or concerns during this work, please contact Assistant Location Manager, Jeremy Fiske, at 508-864-6422.

I just happened to be walking home from the silent film at the Theater, and walked past the new Tasty Mo:Mo place. It's full of relatives as they celebrate their opening. Free appetizer sample of the Aloo Dum and rice was yummy and well spiced. I got veggie momo take-out which was terrific.

Momo in chicken/pork/beef/veg: $6.50. Also Chowmein, Chicken Chilly, Fried Rice, Aloo Dum. Rest of items range from $6-8.00.

Overheard from others waiting for food in the mild chaos and store full of relatives: "This is exactly like Kathmandu."

As has been mentioned on this group before, my wife [livejournal.com profile] somerville_lmt and I are building a float center in Magoun Square. We have full construction plans and bids from contractors and a pending application for a building permit, and now have just launched pre-orders in the form of a crowdfund campaign.  Since so much of our expenses are in the form of construction and equipment purchase, every dollar we can get now helps immensely with cash flow.

Pre-order now at: float.tilt.com

More information at our website, www.floatboston.com.  As always, glad to answer any questions people may have.

Last fall we asked you your opinion on locations for our flotation therapy business. I'm excited to share that after a long search, we've signed a lease at 515 Medford St. in Magoun Square. If all goes well, we'll be on track for opening in October. If you'd like to stay up to date on our progress, you can sign up for our mailing list at floatboston.com.

There's an article about us in this week's DigBoston - take a look!

Considering there are limited spots, I thought I would post this now...

Please join the Somerville Arts Council as we explore Magoun Square with the first Restaurant and Market Tour. Magoun Square is a hidden gem of culinary treats that represents a diverse population here in Somerville.

Why a food tour? Because food and drink are a common denominator that gets people talking. In addition, we’ll learn about the history of these stores and how their clientele represents the cultural community of Somerville.

Featured businesses include: Daddy Jones Bar, K2 Beer & Wine, Modelo Butcher Market, Olde Magoun’s Saloon and Pennypacker's. Visitors will have a chance to meet with shop owners and learn more about specific foods and each owner’s cultural traditions.

The tour will be on Thursday, May 29th from 6-8 p.m.

Spots are limited so please RSVP to Carlene Campbell-Hegarty at ccampbell@somervillema.gov or (617) 625-6600 ext. 2615.

Daddy Jones Bar is looking to expand their seating area by adding a patio to the back of the property which faces Broadway. The Magoun Square eatery will stand before the Zoning Board of Appeals on June 4th to request permission to add the space, but will be holding a community meeting on Monday May 19th at 6:00pm to hear concerns from abutters.

A member of Somerville Local First and participant in this year's Taste of Somerville, the establishment and it's owner Dimitra Tsouranis-Murphy have made a positive impact on the community while running the much talked-about restaurant located at 525 Medford Street.

A flier states, "Daddy Jones Bar is proposing to put an outdoor patio at the rear of their property on Broadway. The patio will only be open until 9:30 PM. Please join us to find out more about the project, see a proposed layout, and meet your neighbors. Meet the owner, Dimitra Murphy, and voice any concerns and ask any questions you may have! Light snacks + refreshments will be provided."

Set to be in attendance is the owner of Daddy Jones Bar Dimitra Tsouranis-Murphy, Ward 5 Alderman Mark Niedergang and surrounding business owners.

Hello Davis Square Friends,

I just wanted to let you know that King of Wings and Penny Packers are coming to Magoun Square this summer!

King of Wings is located at 514 Medford Street and Penny Packers is located at 514C (both spaces were the former location of Basil Tree Catering). I wasn't able to locate phone numbers for either.

King of Wings does have a Facebook Page featuring their menu and price range (maximum of $10), but their website isn't up yet. I thought I saw some people in there the other night, but am not sure. Their Facebook is WWW.Facebook.Com/Pages/King-of-Wings-Boston/259436317520437. Should this not work, a quick search brings them right up.

Penny Packers is starting some construction and will feature 10 seats when they open this summer. They have a Twitter account that you can follow: @PennyPackers and have two food trucks that they operate in Boston. Their website is http://www.pennypackersfoodtruck.com.

Magoun Square is only a hop, skip and a jump away from Davis and, once the Community Path Extension is finished, you can take it right up to Lowell Street and on to Magoun.

The Modelo Butcher Market, located at 501 Medford Street in Magoun Square, is open today! This is another new business in a string of businesses that have opened up shop in Magoun, including a beer and wine store, hairdresser, and alterations/dry cleaning service.

Featuring cold cuts, fruits, meats, and seafood, the former Cara Donna location has undergone a massive interior and exterior renovation throughout the winter for today's opening.

At this point, there is no website for the business and I have yet to locate a phone number. I will comment this information when it becomes available.

Happy Sunday,

I just wanted to spread the word that Daddy Jones Bar (525 Medford Street/Magoun Square) is now open for business Tuesday through Sunday, 5pm to 1am with the kitchen closing at 10pm.

The owner, Dimitra Tsouranis, is Somerville-born and a new addition to the Board of Directors for Somerville Local First.

You can find out more about Magoun's new eatery via their website or Twitter

Hi Davis Square friends,

I'm very excited to spread the word that MF Dulock, craft butcher shop located at 201A Highland Avenue, is opening at 11am on Tuesday morning! The Somerville Chamber of Commerce has just posted a notice regarding some rather strident rule changes apparently implemented by the Traffic and Parking Commission last Thursday. There's no effective date as of yet, nor any official announcement from the City, although these items are all on the official agenda from last Thursday's meeting.
